Acts 4:34–5:14
The early church had 2 things going for them:
1- They were completely devoted to the message of the gospel
2- They were filled with the Holy Spirit
The stories in Acts are not just about the early church, they are about us, His church, today as well.
“There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.” (Acts 4:34–35, ESV)
The early Christians had a sense that their community was more important than their stuff.
“Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.” (Acts 4:36–37, ESV)
“But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?” (Acts 5:1–3, ESV)
“While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”” (Acts 5:4, ESV)
What was wrong with what Ananias and Sapphira did?
Ananias presented the gift as if it were the entire amount.
“When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.” (Acts 5:5–11, ESV)
Why did Ananias and Sapphire do what they did?
They knew they could not receive the praise of people unless they gave away all of their money.
But they loved their money, so they lied about giving away all their money in order to receive the praise of the people.
When you see things like: lying, cheating, jealousy, and coveting, don’t just try to get rid of them. Find the source and get rid of the source. The source loves attention of people more than God.
What is God teaching us through this story?
1. In the church, there are two kinds of people and it is nearly impossible to
distinguish them from the outside.
What is hidden in your heart that no one can see?
Ask yourself, “When my mouth says ‘Jesus is Lord’ does my lifestyle (seen & unseen) back up that statement?”
If what your mouth says is different from what your life says, what your life says is a better testimony of what you believe than anything that comes from your mouth.
2. We cannot hide from God.
“And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13, ESV)
One day, it is not going to matter what people think about you because it will be revealed who you really are.
3. Fear is a part of worship.
“And great fear came upon all who heard of it.” (Acts 5:5b, ESV)
“And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.” (Acts 5:11, ESV)
“And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,” (Acts 5:14, ESV)
The love of God grows out of the fear of God.
It is the fear of God that makes the love of God intense.
“So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.” (Acts 9:31, ESV)
Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace, my fears relieved!
4. Sin is a deadly serious matter to God.
Application Questions:
1. Are you pretending to be more spiritual than you really are?
2. What areas have you not surrendered to God?
3. Are you treating God flippantly?
Have you taken the salvation that was purchased for you by the death of Jesus on the cross and used it as a license to sin?
Do not take salvation and his grace as an excuse to not be focused on personal holiness and daily becoming more like Jesus.
4. Are you more concerned about your glory than God’s?
Bottom line: What’s underneath the surface?
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, ESV)
If you expose your sin, He will forgive you.
If you hide your sin, He will condemn you.
The message of the gospel is this:
You are known fully…and you are loved completely.
“You are more sinful than you could dare imagine and more loved and accepted than you could ever dare hope.” -Tim Keller
We are all Ananias and Sapphira.
But Jesus died, he took our death, so if you confess your sin, if you embrace Jesus, His acceptance can be yours because your death was His.
