Our sermon today concerns an encounter Jesus had with a man named Zacchaeus who was sitting in a sycamore tree. Zacchaeus is sort of an ironic fellow. Zacchaeus is a Hebrew name meaning “clean or pure” but he was a corrupt tax collector who worked for the Roman Government. What happens when a church forgets her purpose? She becomes distracted and unconcerned as the devil steals, kills, and destroys. Do not be deceived, our enemy is on the prowl and ready to pounce; sowing seeds of discord in the world and leaving a trail of destruction. Jesus came to “destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8) and He calls the Church to labor in this work. Jesus made this clear when He said: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt 28:18-20). You may have heard this question before: “Can God create a rock so large that He is unable to lift it?” It is a well-known and challenging question because the Bible teaches that God is all-powerful and has complete control (Omnipotence). Therefore, if you answer ‘No, He cannot make a rock too large…’ you feel awkward saying that God is unable to do so. But, if you answer ‘Yes, He can make a rock too large…’, then once again you are saying that God is unable to do something.
