This message reflects on the biblical encounter between Jesus and “the woman caught in adultery” to contrast notions of “justice” rooted in a judge issuing a verdict of guilty/not guilty followed by punishment vs. a restorative vision of
justice.
As in John 8, religious and political leaders all too often use the marginalized as political props to assert their own power. In our own times, White Christian Nationalism is used to justify and prop up such abusive power.
Through Jesus's refusal to condemn the woman, Pastor Eric calls us toward a strategy of nonviolent resistance that pursues a justice rooted in de-escalating violence and maintaining accountability, while insisting on mercy—a justice that can heal and restore our brokenness, rather than deepen and exacerbate it.
Pastor Eric ends with an urgent call to action, inviting the congregation to participate in a public march to represent such a faith in the face of the brutality of White Christian Nationalism.
