Feelin' Film

In this episode - a transparent documentary about the success of and struggles that resulted from the athletic game show competition AMERICAN GLADIATORS which aired from 1989-1996, including a fascinating search for the truth about who deserves credit for its creation. We also have a conversation with director Ben Berman about how he became involved in this project, his approach to truth-telling in documentary, the long grind of filmmaking, and much more. Then Aaron and Patrick wrap up with a brief chat about whether they think the show could work today and if a film adaptation could be successful.

Family! Family, family, family... family; family? FAMMMMMMIIILLLLLLYYY. The family is in trouble because Dante Reyes is out for blood, but first he wants to cause them as much suffering as possible, which means we need even more family to come back so that they can be punished, too. This entry goes fully self-aware and asks us to laugh at it instead of just with it. We don't exactly think it's a good movie, but we both enjoyed our time in the theater and feel kind of conflicted about that. Listen in as we go through franchise burnout therapy.

A largely underrated gem in A24's catalog, this coming-of-age story is among the most natural we've ever seen, with an authenticity to its characters and dialogue that make it heartbreakingly and beautifully relatable. We chat about teenage alcoholism, keeping secrets from your children, and what it means to live in the moment, among other things, in this conversation.

Our time with the Guardians of the Galaxy as we've known them for nearly ten years now is coming to an end. We get backstories, a rescue mission, lots of relationship closure, plenty of laughs, one exceptional action sequence, some fantastic needle drops, a strangely boring new future teammate, and a somewhat alarming amount of animal torture. James Gunn does his own thing, that's for sure, for better and worse. Listen now for our thoughts!

David Lowery has a way with fantasy and imagery and for the second time he is adapting a Disney animated film into live-action, this time a much more well-known one. But does he bring enough creativity and imaginative vision to set this version apart from the man that came before? And why is Peter Pan only the third most interesting character in a movie whose title starts with his name? We dig into the new straight to Disney+ release and even debate that strategy along the way.
