  • Ep 59. Jordan Harbinger: The Inner Workings of Effortless Charm

Meet Jordan Harbinger (@TheArtofCharm), show host for an iTunes Top 50 podcast called The Art of Charm (AoC). AoC also offers in-person training to help people become more charismatic in any situation, master their careers by becoming “super-connectors" and revamp their love lives and intimate relationships with confidence.

The AoC podcast receives over 2 million downloads per months, with over 440+ episodes featuring guests such as Tim Ferriss, Seth Godin, Ramit Sethi and Noah Kagan.

The AoC's in-person training is so popular that attendees need to register months in advance. The residential program is currently only open to men.  Jordan helps answer as to why this decision is necessary to help people achieve their goals.

As you can imagine, Jordan is a public figure.  He is known as more of "a sung hero" on Feisworld Podcast. Why did we choose Jordan?

We wanted to know what it's like to run a popular brand, a podcast and a training program in the eyes of the public.

    Key Discussion Points with Jordan:
    • Being famous isn't always easy. How does Jordan deal with negative feedback and (even) "hate mails"?
    • As a podcaster, I struggle with some of my interviews, especially under the circumstance that I'm speaking with a guest for the first time. What's Jordan's advice on managing one's anxiety?
    • What Jordan means by "rescuing yourself" and why it's a crucial skill to have (for anyone)
    • What was the early days like at the AoC, before millions of downloads, interviewing world-class leaders, businessmen about their hopes and dreams?
    • How did Jordan start his passion project? How/When did it transition into a legacy business?
    • What are some of the lessons Jordan could pass onto us  podcasters and entrepreneurs
    • My favorite segment: what was Jordan like when he was 10 years old?

    • Ep 57: Matthew Cronin: Meet the Middle East. One person at a time.

Matthew Cronin is a 21-year old student majoring Foreign Policy at Boston University. He is expected to graduate in May 2016.

Matthew and I met at Inna’s Kitchen in Newton, MA, where he works part-time. Through a casual conversation over a year ago, I found out that Matthew would be studying abroad in the Middle East as part of his study-abroad program. I couldn't wait for his return and learn more about his experience.

Although study-abroad was not a requirement for his major, Matthew chose a path to learn more about the Middle East through the people and culture.  To prepare for his trip, Matthew took extensive courses in learning Arabic, a language he finds artistic and beautiful.

In this short 30-min conversation with Matthew Cronin, we discussed:

      • His earlier life, as a high school dropout, before Boston University
      • Learning Arabic: a beautiful language (by its sound and construction in a root system)
      • First impressions in Jordan and Morocco
      • Getting to the people in the Middle East
      • "A high-contact society" in "a system with no system"
      • Study-abroad in the Middle East and a social life away from home
      • Life skills for immigrants, travelers and students from Place A to B
      • A growing appreciation for social networks and human connections

      • Ep 56: Mick Ebling: Help One. Help Many. #NotImpossible

Mick Ebeling (@MickEbeling, @NotImpossible) is an American film, television and commercial Executive Producer, author, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Mick has been honored by Advertising Age as one of the “Top 50 Most Creative People”, also in Wired Magazine Agent of Change, the recipient of the 2014 Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Mick founded the Not Impossible Labs, a company committed to creating technology for the sake of humanity. The two known projects are Project Daniel and The Eyewriter.

The Eyewriter was created for Tony 'TEMPT' Quan, who is a legendary LA graffiti artist, social activist, and publisher who was diagnosed with ALS in 2003. Mick organized a crew of hackers and artists to invent a low-cost, open source DIY device that would let Tempt create art with his eyes. Through trial and error, The Eyewriter was born and Tempt was back to using his creativity.

Project Daniel was for by a Sudanese boy named Daniel, whose arms are blown off during a bombing of his village and is incited to help. Mick illegally travels to the Nuba Mountains to find Daniel, make him a prosthetic arm, and teach the locals about the process as well.

I met Mick at the FutureM Boston in November 2015.  His story silenced the entire auditorium and drew tears to my eyes. His message "Commit then figure it out" continues to echo in my mind and influences my decisions in choosing what I work on, people I spend time with.

Caitie is not a writer by trait. Not long ago, she was a Senior Foreign Policy Advisor in Congress. After four years,  she decided it was time to take a dream deferred and put it out into the world.

In Part 2, we unveil the journey of Caitie’s departure from Washington, D.C. to Brooklyn, New York.  Transitioning from a comfortable life, envious career, stable income to what she calls “a total White Belt”.  Caitie discovered the magic of having abundance in other parts of her life such as creativity, inspiration, entrepreneurship.

        Part 2:

        • What was the pilot process of Lightening Note Version 1?

In Part 1 of my interview with Caitie, we explore a life well lived in DC, including what it was like to work on Capital Hill and be in the trenches with other people day in and day out. We had the opportunity to dive into Caitie's routine and daily life as a Senior Foreign Policy Advisor too. • Ep 53. Karen Fan and Felege Gebru (Part 2): a journey from Newton North High School to the White House

In 2013, NNHS InvenTeam applied to enter the Lemelson-MIT High School Student Grant. After a year of hard work (including the summer), their project was chosen to be presented at the White House Science Affair in front of President Barack Obama.

In Part 2, we set aside glories and trophies and began focusing on the daily lives of two college students:

          • What is the day in the life of an MIT / Brown student?
          • How to be obtain a "Pirate License" at MIT?
          • Why does Felege run with a "clicker" in the morning at Brown?
          • What do MIT college students do day in and day out?
          • What are a few things (in Karen and Felege's opinions) that could improve the current state of higher education?
          • Why is it important to learn how to think?
          • Quick final questions - What does success mean? How to live a fulfilling life? What does  a dream project look like to Karen and Felege without concerns of budget and resources
          • How did this all happen?

You may be wondering how I got in touch with Mrs. Brooks in the first place. In 2011, I helped organize a field trip for design students at the Commonwealth School and Newton North High School to visit Sapient (an agency I was working for at the time) to explore design opportunities beyond traditional disciplines. Immediately after the field trip, I created the very first High School Internship Program at SapientNitro.

Today as part of Feisworld Inc. services and offerings, I continue to mentor high school, college students and young professionals: http://www.feisworld.com/work-with-fei/

Show notes, tools and resources: feisworld.com/blog/karen-fan-felege-gebru

I have served on the Advisory Committee for Newton Public Schools Career & Vocational Technical Education Committee since 2011.

I met Karen Fan and Felege Gebru through InvenTeam, initiated by an incredible art teacher named Sue Brooks at Newton North High School. InvenTeam functions very much like a small design and technology firm, where every student on the team has a specific role such as a designer, engineer, product manager.

InvenTeam chose to participate in the Lemelson-MIT competition. After a year of hard work, their project was chosen to be presented at the White House Science Affair in 2014. President Barack Obama greeted the students and even asked questions about the project.

When I received an email from Mrs. Brooks about this update, I almost fell out of my chair at work. As you can imagine, I had to invite them to Feisworld.

Today, Karen is a Sophomore at MIT and Felege is a Junior at Brown.

In Part 1, we dive right into their visit to the White House:

            • What was it like for them to meet with President Obama, presenting to him and then having an intellectual exchange?
            • How was InvenTeam formed?
            • Who was the key person to make it happen?
            • What was the project they worked on? Who did they collaborate with?
            • How has this experience changed both of their lives?
            • What does design have to do with technology?
            • Why does Mrs. Brooks go out of her way to help students who are interested in arts?

Courtney Marsh (@courtneynmarsh) is a director and filmmaker.  Courtney's latest film Chau, Beyond the Lines is a documentary about a 16-year-old teenager named Chau in Vietnam who was disabled by the effects of Agent Orange. Chau aspires to become an artist and clothing designer.

Agent Orange is the chemical sprayed over the jungles in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, to deprive the Northern Vietnamese Army of their food and cover. 30 years after the war, there are still young people like Chau who are affected by these chemicals.

Srini Rao (@umistakableCEO) is the host and founder of The Unmistakable Creative podcast where he has conducted over 600 interviews with thought leaders and people from all walks of life. Srini has a distinctive view into branding, storytelling, and marketing.

Unmistakeable Creative isn't your typical popular podcast. As a listener, you never hear from the same people or experience common topics.  Srini loves asking questions that have never been asked before. He doesn't let anyone off the hook easy as he expects no easy answers.

Interviewing Srini wasn't a walk-in-the-park either. Instead of focusing on his achievements, putting Unmistakeable Creative on a pedestal, I took a different approach to delve into his daily practice, routines and beliefs. I hope you take away as much as you can TODAY (not tomorrow) to practice what Srini has taught us.

We cover a lot in this episode including:
              • How Srini first discovered the magic of surfing, which has been an integral part of his creative life in the past 7 years
              • Srini speaks to his two new books to be released in 2016
              • The process of working with a publisher vs. self-publishing
              • Why Srini chooses not to check emails for the first 4 hours of the day
              • What is a typical day like for Srini?
              • How he spends the first hour after he wakes at around 6:30am
              • Demystify habits of the most creative people
              • Bulletproof coffee and low carb meals
              • What does it mean to Srini to practice his freedom
              • Diving into Unmistakeable Creative: How Srini creates / produces / iterates on inputs and outputs. (Plus, why he believes iterations and experimentations are essential for creative work)
              • New animated shorts - how they elevated the Unmistakeable Creative brand and altered brand perception
              • How Srini prepares for his 600+ interviews
              • Creative input vs. process (How to choose guests and where to seek inspirations)
              • If you learned a few things while listening to the podcast, please give Srini a shoutout on Twitter.
