  • EP 21: Timothy Oleksiak: On Listening, Facebook Debates, & Throwing Shade
Friend and colleague of the podcast, Timothy Oleksiak, joins Raechel to discuss his research on listening as a rhetorical act. How can we listen differently during Facebook "fights" in a way that allows for social and/or political transformation? Who is accountable for listening when the content being heard is oppressive or violent? How might we "queer" listening and how do "queers listen"? How are 'reading' and 'shade' practices of listening? We discuss all this and much more! Plus, Timothy joins me for RWLs of the week!

  • Rerun: Grrrrls with Tattoos
***Mel & Raechel will be back next week with a new episode, but for now enjoy a replay of episode 2! *** In this episode of Feminist Killjoys, PhD, Raechel and Melody discuss being women with many large, visible tattoos. How does having tattoos impact our careers? What do our decisions to get heavily tattooed mean in relationship to our identities (as women? as feminists? as punks? as working-class?) ? How do we respond to “tat-calling”?

  • EP 20: Clean [&Black] Comedy: Interview with John Gebretatose of Blackout Improv
In episode 20 (!), Melody and Raechel had the pleasure of sitting down with John Gebretatose, a charming man of many titles: he's a comedian with Blackout Improv, the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Huge Improv Theater, and the Founder of the Twin Cities Black and Funny Improv Festival. We asked John about the goals of his all-Black comedy troupe, how to make jokes about race and racism, what comedians inspire him, and much much more. And we got him to join us for our RWLing of the week!

  • Ep 19: On Allyship (& Accomplicing, Solidarity, & Accountability)
Today, Melody and Raechel talk about what it means to be an ally (or, the more preferred term, "accomplice"). What does it mean to be accountable when you're called out? How can we break through "white fragility"? How do we communicate with fellow activists in the struggle, and how do we communicate with non-activists? How can we center the voices of people of color without asking them to do the labor of teaching all the time? How can we actually put our bodies on the line to be in real solidarity with the movement for Black lives and Black liberation?

  • Ep 17: AOL Survey Throwback!
Melody and Raechel needed a break from the heaviness of the state of things, so they decided to travel back to the late 90s for some AOL-era survey questions! Admittedly, they still manage to talk about some heavy stuff--(CN: brief discussion of Michael Jackson's history of child sexual abuse)--and kill some joy, but overall it's a pretty light episode full of laughs and getting to know more about your two fave feminist hosts! <3
Plus our regular installments of Who's Ruining the Dinner Party? and our RWLs of the week!

  • EP 15: Reflections on Orlando, Queer Latinx Lives, Queer Grief & Resistance
Today Melody and Raechel reflect on the tragedy in Orlando when 49 queer, mostly Latinx, lives were lost and 53 more injured. In the discussion they talk about the problems with the media representation of the event, specifically the erasure of Latinx identity, the inaccurate representation of motive, the perpetuation of Islamophobia, and blatantly ignoring our racist, homophobic country's complicity in this. In addition, we discuss a bit about the history of the Queer Liberation movement, specifically as it relates to gay bars, and what it means to live alongside grief as queer people. Plus, check-ins and our RWLs of the week.

  • Ep 15: Hillary Clinton, Jill Stein, & Building the Left - Interview with Keegan O'Brien
In today's episode, Mel & Raechel talk about their responses to the news that Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee for President and what it would mean to vote for Jill Stein instead. Joining them to discuss this is Keegan O'Brien, an organizer with the International Socialist Organization and teacher in the Boston area.
Plus, Mel & Raechel check-in about their weeks, and, as always, share what they are Reading/Watching/Listening to. xo

Also! Please forgive the static in this episode. We're working on raising enough funds to get some better equipment, but for now we're running into some issues. The static is off and on, feel free to fast forward through the tough parts (we edited as much as we could).
Today, Melody and Raechel talk about a bunch of stuff in the news that has made them very angry killjoys. After going two weeks without recording together, M & R enjoyed getting back to ranting about injustice. Tune in to hear them discuss Jet Blue slut shaming, Harambe the Gorilla, guns and the UCLA school shooting, sexual assault in higher ed, and more. Plus a shout out to Ali (RIP), and what they are Reading/Watching/Listening to!
