  • Femme on Film: Barbie

Ria and Alyson take the opportunity to discuss Barbie! Finding words to describe the impact of Barbie on both Femme on hosts is hard to sum up in the show notes, so just take a listen to get their full thoughts on the film, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie's vision and how rarely we get to see feminist joy on screen.

  • Fine Cut with Alyson: Liz Santoro

Alyson and Liz Santoro (Cinematographer and Camera Operator on features and travel shows, most recently Never Say Never with Jeff Jenkins for Disney +) talk about Joan is Awful (Season 6, Episode 1 of Black Mirror) and specifically the scene where the two stars of the episode, Annie Murphy (as Joan) and Salma Hayek (as herself) meet.  It’s a powerful feminist scene that passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors and it’s fun to watch two women decide that instead of blaming each for this flaming pile of shit situation they find themselves in, they decide to become allies in their quest to take it all down. Alyson loved talking with longtime friend and sometime collaborator Liz (Liz shot Alyson’s feature film, Eve of Understanding) and putting their film school hats back on to dissect a scene and talk about all the things that are right about it.

  • Fine Cut with Alyson: Meera Vijayann

Alyson and Meera Vijayann (journalist who covers health and gender issues and the writer of beautiful micro essays on Instagram) discuss the iconic scene when Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) draws Rose (Kate Winslet) wearing only that blue diamond necklace in James Cameron’s Titanic. Meera dives deep into the experience of being a small town tween in India and the passionate reactions to Titanic and this scene. How the film resonated with an Indian audience because of the strong class elements of the film and also about Rose’s nudity, which is something they’d never seen before and how she had to watch the film multiple times before she actually saw that part without it being edited or fuzzed out. A fascinating conversation about how still, to this day, representations of female nudity divorced from judgements of morality are rare. And Meera reveals that Indian audiences just weren’t that bothered when Rose didn’t make room for Jack on that door. Come and have a listen and find out why!
