Fenekie Explorer Club

Meet Echo, the Night Parrot of New Zealand. In this episode of the Fenekie Explorer Club, we get up close with the kakapo: a flightless parrot who climbs thirty-metre trees in the dark and sends a boom five kilometres across a dark valley, from a bowl he shaped in the earth with his own body.

We wonder together about:
• Why the kakapo stopped flying millions of years ago, and what it does instead
• The boom: what it sounds like, why you might feel it in your chest before your ears catch it, and how far it carries across a still valley
• How the kakapo smells of lavender and honey, and why that scent is both a gift and a danger
• How the kakapo went from fifty-one birds on the entire planet to two hundred and thirty-six, one named bird at a time
• Why the best way to love a kakapo is to let it stay wild, on its island, booming into the dark

Wonder first, facts second. Conservation through love, not fear.

Made for families to listen to together.

Meet Rusty, the Bamboo Acrobat of the Eastern Himalayas. In this episode of the Fenekie Explorer Club, we get up close with the red panda: a fire-colored climber no bigger than a house cat, with curved claws built for bark and a secret that hides on the side of his wrist - a sixth finger that evolved for reaching the highest branch.

We wonder together about:
• A wrist bone that grew there millions of years ago, not for eating, but for reaching
• False thumbs that evolved twice, in red pandas and giant pandas alike
• How bamboo flowers once every few decades, and what that means for a panda's supper
• The ancient Himalayan mountains where Rusty wakes before dawn to climb
• Why the best way to love a red panda is to let it stay wild

Wonder first, facts second. Conservation through love, not fear.

Meet Blinco, the Night Ninja of Bohol. In this episode of the Fenekie Explorer Club, we get up close with the Philippine tarsier: a watchman small enough to fit in one hand, with golden eyes bigger than his own brain and a leap that crosses twenty feet of dark forest in total silence.

We wonder together about:
• Eyes so big they cannot move, not even a tiny bit, and what Blinco does instead
• The head-turn trick: almost all the way around, like a furry little owl
• Spring-loaded ankles that gave the tarsier its name
• A secret voice pitched too high for any human ear to hear
• Why the best way to love a tarsier is to let it stay wild

Meet Blue, the Sky Giant of the Pantanal, the largest flying parrot on Earth. In this episode of the Fenekie Explorer Club, we get up close with the hyacinth macaw: the deep cobalt feathers, the two bright yellows, and a beak so strong it cracks palm nuts that nothing else can open.

We wonder together about:
• Why Blue's beak is the most powerful of any parrot on the planet
• How a giant of the sky begins life as small as five grapes
• The manduvi tree Blue depends on for a home
• The "toucan paradox": the same bird that plants Blue's tree also threatens his eggs
• How people are helping the hyacinth macaw come back

A mammal that hunts underwater with its eyes and ears sealed shut, sensing electricity with its face. This week on the Fenekie Explorer Club, we dive into the story of the platypus, one of Earth's most extraordinary creatures.

In this episode:
• What makes a platypus so genetically unusual (egg-laying mammal, venomous ankles, no stomach)
• How electrolocation works (40,000 sensors in its bill reading electrical pulses)
• Why the platypus made British scientists doubt themselves in 1799
• Real conservation: what river health means to these creatures

Can a chameleon really disappear? Not quite, and the truth is far more wonderful. Cam the Color Wizard lives in the rainforests of Madagascar, where his skin speaks in colors: calm greens, excited oranges, feelings painted right onto his body for the whole forest to read.

In this episode of the Fenekie Explorer Club, we discover how panther chameleons really change color, why their eyes can look two ways at once, and what their tongue can do faster than you can blink.
