The two disciples in Luke 24 didn't recognise Jesus to begin with, but as He broke bread, their eyes were opened. N.T. Wright describes this as the first meal of the new creation. The curse has been broken. Death is defeated. God's new creation, brimming with life and joy and new possibility, has burst in upon the world of decay and sorrow. Jesus himself, risen from the dead, is the beginning and the sign of the new world. The road to Emmaus is just the beginning. Hearing Jesus' voice in scripture, knowing him in the breaking of bread, is the way. Welcome to God's new world.
