Publisher's Summary:
In 1986, K. W. Jeter coined the term steampunk, applying it to his first Victorian-era science fiction alternate-history adventure. At last he has returned with a new tale of George Dower, son of the inventor of Infernal Devices, who has been in self-imposed exileaccumulating debt.
The world Dower left when he went into hiding was significantly simpler than the new, steam-powered Victorian London; a mad whirl of civilization filled with gadgets and gears in the least expected places. After accepting congratulations for his late father's grandest invention - a walking, steam-powered lighthouse - Dower is enticed by the prospect of financial gain into a web of intrigue with ominously mysterious players who have nefarious plans about which he can only guess. If he can make his father's Vox Universalis work as it was intended, his future is assured. But his efforts are confounded by the strange Vicar Stonebrake, who promises him aid, but seems more interested in converting sentient whales to Christianity than in helping George. Drugged, arrested, and interrogated by men, women, and a steam-powered Prime Minister, Dower is trapped in a maelstrom of secrets, corruption, and schemes that threaten to drown him in the chaos of this mad new world.

It's.....OK.....
This is a qasi-sequel to _Infernal Devices_ (which I re-read before reading _Fiendish Schemes_)
I found it to be not as clever as it's predecessor, and a little too over-the-top
A few characters are brought back in this tale from the previous book and one's description was conspicuously lacking of a major detail of their appearance not mentioned
I'm still debating whether to honour it with a place in my bookshelf, or to re-sell or give it away.....I don't do this often with my SF/Fantasy books
The Steampunk master returns to his seminal setpiece
K.W. Jeter returns to the strangely twisted England of George Dower and pens a fitting sequel to his seminal Steampunk novel, Infernal Devices. It would be easy to say that Jeter is amongst the most wildly inventive and diverse writers of his generation, but he's more than that, the craftsmanship of his writing simply puts him at the top of his class. This isn't just a tale of adventure set in a world where steam rules supreme, it's also a deconstruction and reconstruction of the hero's tale. If you are a fan of Jeter and have already read Infernal Devices, buy this book. If not, buy it AND this one. You'll be in for a fun, frightening, thrilling, and sometimes repellant ride.
Great Product and seller
Great Product and seller
I really enjoyed this book.
Whacky, weird and wonderful... filled with vexing fex and other ferric follies. Grand stuff and a great conclusion. My heart goes out to all who fail to feel its pull. Personally, I enjoyed the affected lampoon of Victorian speech and attitudes... I was most amused by the steamier bits, and am waiting for more CoalPunk
Not so much mad as bad Victorian fantasy
"Fiendish Schemes" is the sequel to "Infernal Devices," one of my favorite steampunk (or maybe steampunk adjacent; it was billed as a mad Victorian fantasy) novels, so it was probably inevitable that the sequel would fail to live up to it, but I didn't expect it to be so far off the mark. It lacks the invention, the drive and the interesting characters of the first book.
