What happens when you get old enough to realize that far fewer people truly support you than you once thought?
In this episode of the Fifty Sixin Podcast, Tyler and BJ get more personal than usual, taking an honest look at friendship, struggle, success, self-doubt, dreams, loyalty, and the people who have helped shape the men they are today.
The conversation begins with a deceptively simple question: Are we actually getting better at life—or have we just gotten better at dealing with the bullshit?
After decades of mistakes, setbacks, careers, relationships, parenting, and hard-earned experience, the guys reflect on how struggle builds confidence and perspective—and whether removing those struggles would have ultimately changed who they became. They also talk about raising the next generation differently: allowing your kids to struggle enough to grow while still providing the guidance and reassurance you may not have had yourself.
From there, Tyler and BJ turn the conversation toward each other and ask:
What's one lesson you've learned from me?
That leads to an unusually open conversation between two longtime friends about patience, consistency, hard work, fatherhood, friendship, showing up for people, and having the confidence to follow your own plan even when everyone around you thinks you should be doing something else. One lesson rises above the rest:
Not for revenge. Not to prove somebody wrong. Build a life you're actually happy living.
The guys also get honest about their own constant internal battles. BJ talks about his tendency toward pettiness and learning when to let things go, while Tyler opens up about walking into rooms where everything is going right but still hearing that internal voice telling him he doesn't belong there.
Then things get even more personal.
What are three feelings that are almost impossible to describe?
The birth of a child. Falling in love. Grief. The rush of hitting the game-winning shot. Shame. Heartbreak. Those moments in life that are so powerful that words never seem capable of explaining them.
And what about the dreams you've never really admitted out loud?
BJ reveals his dream of becoming an R&B singer—and maybe a superhero—while Tyler admits something even BJ didn't expect he's always wished he could really dance.
But one of the biggest conversations of the episode centers on who really f*cks with you.
As you get older, you begin noticing the difference between people who know you and people who genuinely support you. Who celebrates your wins? Who calls when they don't need something? Who defends your name when you're not in the room? Who tells you when you're wrong? Who shows up when life goes bad—not just when everything is good? And who supports what you're trying to build simply because they support you?
Maybe adulthood isn't about collecting more friends.
Maybe it's about finally figuring out who your friends actually are.
The episode also challenges the idea that our careers should define us. BJ explains why he tells the people he supervises not to make the job their entire identity: careers can change or disappear, but the person you are outside of the job has to remain.
Finally, Tyler and BJ look back at the mentors, coaches, friends, colleagues, and other people who influenced their lives—and why the people willing to give honest advice, defend your name, answer the phone, support the crazy idea, or simply ask “What can I do to help?” can change the trajectory of your life.
This is Fifty Sixin at its most honest: two friends talking about the things men don't always say to each other—mixed with plenty of jokes, questionable confessions, pettiness, and the kind of conversations that happen when you've known someone long enough to call them on their bullshit.
