OER you kidding me?

One of the 2018 OE Consortium Student Award winners (Natalie Miller), James Glappa-Grossklag (Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning at College of the Canyons), and I discuss the huge potential for student collaboration in open education.

Recorded at the 2018 OE Global Conference in Delft, this episode covers remixing cats (seriously), student advocates for open textbooks, connecting with the student body on open education initiatives, and how students can become more embedded partners for educational institutions.

I'd also like to congratulate Shifrah Gadamsetti (Mount Royal University, Calgary) who was the recipient of an OE Consortium Student Award for her work in raising awareness of OER.  This included running workshops, and seminars, and campaigns to highlight the benefits of open textbooks. Marc Singer [Vice Provost, Thomas Edison State University, NJ) and I take some time out of the 2018 OE Global Conference to discuss the intersection of open education and recognising prior learning.  Marc outlines the types of transferable support mechanisms available for students, and how open informal learning might be translated into degree credit.  We also cover a number of reasons why institutions would become involved in this type of activity, and the student benefits to doing so.

After a long hiatus, the podcast is back!  In this episode I talk to Johanna Funk (Research Associate and PhD Candidate at the Northern Institute, Charles Darwin University) about her practice.  Johanna works with remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, which gives a very interesting perspective on open practices.

We talk about how openness can be used to inform processes when working with traditional knowledge systems, and the art of 'getting out of the way'.

At the end of the episode we do mention the University fo Hawai'i.  You can check out some of their work (led by Billy Meinke) here.  Not only are they sharing work, but also working openly with the global community (for example the current OER Workflow) which really exemplifies open practices.
