Who’s the Captain Now? (Matthew 6:22-24)

We said we’d cover the rest of Matthew 6 in one episode. We were wrong. So Alan and Shawn slow down for three verses that deserve it: the eye is the lamp of the body, and no one can serve two masters. What are you fixing your eyes on, in your marriage, your work, and your mind? And in a “have it your way” culture, who is actually the captain of your life? Along the way: a Bible study argument over whether evil is a thing or the absence of good, Spider-Man’s Venom, the Transformers’ Allspark, and why the captain’s chair belongs to God. Next time: don’t be anxious (Matthew 6:25-34). Stay in the fight.

Secret Fasts and Rusty Treasure (Matthew 6:16-21)

We’re back in Matthew 6, and Jesus is asking a tough question: who are you doing this for? Alan and Shawn dig into his teaching on fasting, why he says to do it in secret, and what it means that the Father sees what no one else does. Along the way they swap stories about a 72-hour fast before a retreat, the man who went 382 days without solid food, and why God knowing us completely is good news, not a threat.

Then they turn to treasure on earth and treasure in heaven. How do we check our hearts when we post about our good deeds or soak up praise in ministry? And can saving and planning ahead actually serve the kingdom? Plus a few Batman references, because of course.

Shawn confesses his greatest worship challenge (sort of) as the guys run through the Lord's Prayer. Jesus knows lays out for us a beautiful pattern of prayer and just how simple it should be instead of the often clumsy attempts we make.

Do you check yourself before you give to or help someone in need? Jesus warns of doing these things for the adoration of those watching. In this episode, Alan & Shawn get into Matthew 6 but stop just shy of The Lord's Prayer...next episode!

Back in the studio, instead of the emergency room, Alan & Shawn finish Matthew 5 talking about how loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us requires more than a feeling. They also avoid a tempting reference to Ricky Bobby when if comes to being perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. You had to be there!

Direct from ER Bay 4 at St. Francis Medical Center, Alan & Shawn discuss going the extra mile! Shawn had an emergency and received excellent care, thanks be to God! Alan popped by the ER to record an episode of this series on the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus calls us to go beyond the minimum requirements in hopes of witnessing to others and the guys got the assignment as they recorded their most expensive episode to date!

MURDER! ANGER! Jesus offers no distinction and begins the call to the believer to examine their hearts more closely.

The Sermon on the Mount continues to be one of the most significant teachings of Jesus. This episode takes on the first teaching of Jesus that expands the understanding of the Law of Moses.

Skipping over the Beatitudes, Alan & Shawn discuss how Jesus expands the Law with His teaching on the Sermon on the Mount. If you are not familiar with the SOTM, it's easily one of the most foundational pieces of Jesus's teachings in the New Testament.
