“Hi! My name is Maria Shuvanova and I’m a filmmaker from Moscow, Russia. I recently graduated from HSE Art and Design School university with a bachelors in Animation and Illustration. “femmes” is my diploma film. I’ve been studying art my whole life, but always really struggled with allowing myself to practice my favorite medium — filmmaking. This film was born out of this inner restriction and represents a first attempt for me to battle the boundaries I put on myself as a young artist. Studying what other women filmmakers have created before inspired me to continue working in this medium. Recently, I collaborated with musician and artist Elina Bolshenkova to create an experimental music video for "New Spelling of Her Name" track from her debut album “Flood Management”. Currently, I continue to collaborate with other women artists to create new projects.”

“My greatest victory will be if even just one person, after watching one of my films, feels less indifferent than before. I was born in 1997 in a small seaside town in the beautiful south of Sicily. From a young age, immersed in the rich folklore and local traditions, I embarked on this journey as an independent filmmaker, later working in various film agencies and specializing as a technician.However, my life has been a dual path: on one hand, I dedicated myself to studies and work as an industrial management engineer, but on the other hand, I felt that there was something inside me that wanted to be set free. It was a feeling I had nurtured for a long time, an inner voice that needed to find its resonance chamber.Sicily, a wonderful land, doesn't offer many opportunities, especially in small towns, where one often feels limited in their ambitions. I decided to leave behind all the certainties I had built over the years and chose to follow the path of cinema. I wrapped up all my projects in Sicily and made the decision to move to Rome, the city of art and possibilities.
