“I think that for now I would consider myself an 'experience' filmmaker and by that I mean, I like to create experiences for the audience, which is why most of my self-created movie posters and credits always say, "an experience by Sasha Stefanov" instead of the traditional, "a film by..."The reasoning behind that is I view cinema as an experience of the senses. It's also a form of escapism. Seeing IMAX movies by Christopher Nolan in true 70mm cinemas is an experience unlike any other. I still remember how amazing that black hole sequence was in an IMAX screening. It's not the same watching it at home, unless you have VR! That's as close you as you can get to your own biggest, private movie theatre in the world. Still prefer real IMAX shows!Another great example is experiencing action movies like Mad Max Fury Road and John Wick 4 in a cinema. They energize you and hype you up because it's raw and in your face and to me that makes it an experience that you just can't replicate at home unless you are Jeff Bezos and have more money than God!Viewing them on a big screen or with a personal home theater just hits differently than seeing them on a small TV, Laptop or Phone and I truly believe that 16x9 is far better than the social media format we've all adapted to, because it engages your entire field of vision to truly see the details in each shot or if there's some cool easter egg a director left. Sometimes it could be foreshadowing too, so subtle, but there for you to see.So, this is a long way (and I apologize for that!) of me saying that the films I create are meant to be experiences rather than to make you think. But, I do want to challenge myself more and venture into more narrative storytelling than what I do now, which is non-narratives. This is Berlin is part of a larger idea I have for a travel series that I'm still developing, called, The Wanderers.”
