Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. It's spooky season and we're doing our first Halloween special and Jack is ecstatic. We've left it fairly open to allow for a broad scope of horror films or otherwise to make the cut, but will any of our choices give you a fright!
Jack's been waiting a long time for both this theme and to talk about this film. The Empty Man has been occupying his mind for a long time and he just needs some willing vessel to pour all of his metaphysical thoughts into... and Des and Paul are just the FUDS for the job.
As always prepare for some hot takes, deep film analysis, someone losing the plot, a bit of banter, a few good taglines, an existential crisis question, a wee quiz and our final scores.
We're all just Mummy's boys at heart and so we've decided to let our Mums pick our films for this theme. The three most important ladies in our life have been tasked with choosing a film that they associate with us and explain why they think that. We'll see if mother really does know best!
Paul's Mum has went for The Karate Kid. Another icon of cinema that is ingrained in the fabric of pop culture. It so endeared an audience that it has spawned a wildly successful spin-off Netflix show. But Miyagi's teaching philosophy has also had a massive impact on the parenting style Paul received and to this day he is the Number One "Daniel-Son" who must wax on/wax off when Mother knows best...

Jack's Mum has picked The Call Of The Wild. This throwback to a simpler time in filmmaking really helped us appreciate how much better films are today! It's not that we can't appreciate the classics, we just can't appreciate them when they're this bad. Which is not a reflection of any FUDs feelings toward Jack's Mum who picked the film for a simple reason. It's one of the first films she remembers him crying his eyes out to!

Des' Mum has chosen Ghostbusters. Obviously an absolute icon of cinema that has influenced so much pop culture and stood the test of time to be an absolute much watch movie for filmgoers of all generations. But that's not why she picked it... it's because he had a proton pack... and maybe some other stuff. Listen in and find out why with the FUDs

What's in a name? So many great characters have the most amazing name, but Paul has one simple challenge. Pick a film where the protagonist shares your name. Ok... Maybe this was more easy for Paul and Jack than it was for Des.
Jack had an absolute smorgasbord of characters he could choose... but it was high time to do a deep dive into a movie that has been mentioned time and again on the pod. Last Action Hero! Is this Arnie's best flick? Jack definitely thinks "maybe". The FUDs get super meta with their film within a film analysis on this one.

Derek did not have many options but has still managed to zero in on pop culture classic Zoolander. The FUD's immerse themselves in the world of male models and espionage as Ben Stiller blue steel's his way through every scene. It's a fun fashionable romp but Paul is raging when Des tells him what he COULD have picked!

Paul has went blockbuster big with his pick! Paul Atreides... Duke or Arrakis. We'll be watching Dune (not the David Lynch one) and we'll be seeking some of the spice of life with a franchise that potentially could be the next generational trilogy after Lord of The Rings and Star Wars! Let's find out why.

Jack feels that some films just come out at the wrong place and time. They're overlooked or overshadowed by a similar film released weeks apart or maybe they get a more successful remake... maybe they even get a TV series. It almost feels like you need an excuse to watch these films when the "superior" version exists... Or something like that. Ask Jack for more details... we're doing overshadowed films.
Paul takes us back into world cinema with Hong Kong classic Infernal Affairs... overshadowed simply because there is a big budget, almost shot for shot Hollywood remake! The FUDs get right into the moral grey areas of undercover work and if remakes should clearly state they're remakes in the marketing!

Des pulls a classic example of an overshadowed film and even has the stats to back it up. EDtv did not smash the box office and this may be because it switched markting tactics to compete with The Truman Show. Could this have done better? Let's get some FUD opinions!

What series of unfortunate events has led this Jim Carrey blockbuster to become overlooked? Well, this is not a story that has a happy ending, or even really any ending that ties together some of the main plot points... Jack has chosen Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events as his overshadowed film!

Welcome to Films Under Discussion, a movie review podcast so named for the trio of FUDs behind the mics.
Long time pals, Des, Paul, and Jack love nothing more than discussing,…
Enjoying their own patter so much, and being three lads approaching middle age (some faster than others), they were moved to bring this mature and sensible insight to the masses. Throw in some facts, quizzes and the odd philosophical meander, and you've got Films Under Discussion.
The format is simple, unique and infinitely repeatable...
One of the FUDs picks a theme and a corresponding film to match. The other two follow with their own film choices based on their interpretation of the theme. Then off they go, discussing one film per episode to varying degrees of sense, taste and decency until the theme is resolved.
Then they do it all again as the next FUD in line picks their theme.
