On March 18, 1937, New London Consolidated School in East Texas exploded shortly after three in the afternoon. Hundreds were killed, though surviving official and institutional records still disagree on the exact toll.

When federal investigator David J. Price examined the wreckage, one object stood out: a student chemistry textbook found open to a section titled “Explosions and Explosive Mixtures.” The detail was uncanny. The investigation itself was more disciplined. Price could strongly support an ignition sequence involving accumulated combustible gas beneath the first floor and an electrical flash near a portable sanding machine. What he could not establish definitely was where the gas had come from.
