Financial Fluency: How Women Thrive Outside of the 9 to 5 episodes

  • Episode #44: Setting Financial Goals
Today I'm talking about goal setting.
There are a lot of different ways that different people like to tackle the issue of financial goal setting.
I tend to work with women who are either starting their own business to leave a traditional nine to five job, or have been out of the traditional nine to five working atmosphere for some time,  so I take a slightly different look at financial goal setting than a lot of other people do.
On the podcast today I'm sharing the four levels of goal setting I use with my clients.

  • Episode #43: Breaking Free with Kathleen Ventura
You may have seen this Business Insider article about my guest this week. Kathleen and her husband quit their jobs, saved up, and rode across the country.
I asked Kathleen how much planning she did, how much they needed to save and how they budgeted. You might be surprised at the answer!
At the end of their trip, Kathleen knew she wanted to make this lifestyle sustainable. So she did! Listen in to find out how she did, and how it's going now.
Kathleen shares her advice for beating overwhelm especially for those just starting out.

  • Episode #42: Why women are behind men in retirement savings
Welcome to today’s episode of Financial Fluency.
Today, I wanted to take a look at retirement savings for women. Recently, I’ve seen some articles that talk about how overall in the U.S, we aren’t saving enough for retirement and then on top of that, women are being most negatively affected. Women seem to be saving less than men and I wanted to look at some of the reasons for that.

  • Episode #41: Changing Direction with Shelley Davidescu
This week my guest is Shelly Davidescu. Shelley started her business as a food coach. And, as seems to happen to a lot of my guests, had a moment where her business changed in response to people's needs.
Often it will come up again and again and this allows you pivot your business and respond to a need that's already there within your space. WIN!
Shelley and I discussed this transition in her business as well as figuring out how to connect with people and build a tribe and how it would be easy to stay safe where it's working rather then follow you intuition, passion and a new excitement.
You can find out more about Shelley and the challenge she mentioned here.

  • Episode #40: Inspiring Entrepreneurship in our kids
This is something I think is important because of the way that the landscape of the workforce has been changing drastically in recent decades. Whether or not you work for a company, nowadays everyone needs to be a self-starter and everyone needs to look out for their own career.
Long gone are the days of careers of working at the same company for 50 years and retiring with a pension plan. We all know that and yet I think what our kids are learning in school is not necessarily pushing them towards this idea of being self-starters and entrepreneurs. I'm not going to speak for all schools, of course, there are different programs in different areas.
Overall what kids learn in school is to sit quietly, keep their heads down, do their work and not to make any troubleLinks

  • Episode #39: Food, Feelings and Finance with Lisa Carpenter
My guest this week is someone I have had great success in working with, so I'm thrilled to have her on the podcast today.
As well as talking all things food and feelings, we got down and dirty on the difference between what you see on the outside of someone's business and what is ACTUALLY going on.
Lisa gave me a totally honest, raw, warts and all look into her business. We both passionately believe that the six figure launches aren't always what they seem. And that it's important to remember this if you're in the first few years of business.
As usual I asked my guest for tips and advice, both financial and in their niche...
Lisa's 3 top tips for biz and life
    1. We all need coaches, make sure you pick one with the emotional capacity to guide you
  • Sometimes you need to STOP looking for coaches, and pay someone to do the things you aren't good at
  • If you're struggling with your relationship with food and your body, if you don't take responsibility for the food you eat - nothing will change. Pay attention to you.

  • Episode #38: How much money do you need to earn?
Today I want to talk about how much money you really need.
This is a pretty tricky topic because need versus want can be so difficult to pin down and put an exact number on, especially when people are thinking about things like their overall goal for retirement.
So here are the two types of people that I run into most:
    1. People who think they need massive amounts of money to do what they want and have the kind of life they want to live. These are people who say they want ten million dollars, or they want their business to be worth 40 million dollars.
    2. People who make top line revenue goals without really accounting for expenses and taxes, and that sometimes gets them into trouble.

  • Episode #37: Worth it! With Amanda Steinberg
I'm so thrilled to welcome this week's guest to the show. I know I would absolutely not be doing what I'm doing on this show and in other areas in my life if I hadn't met Amanda back in 2012.
Amanda and I spoke about what to do if you have a fluctuating income (which most of us entrepreneurs do!), how she's ended up hanging out with European prime ministers (!) and the different messaging women and men get from the media around finances.

  • Episode #36: Don't go against your nature
Today, I want to talk about the nature of things, about our nature, our personal nature, things that come naturally to us and how we can work with those things instead of against them.
I have a few examples here from my own personal life. The first one is that I'm a pretty naturally disorganized person. A lot of people who meet me are confused when I tell them this but it's true.
One of the reasons I love systems and setting up things so that when one thing happens, something else happened, systems to automate my finances, systems to give me reminders and notifications of different things is because I can't keep all of that stuff in my head, is because I am so disorganized. I need my systems!
