๐๏ธ Episode 34: Money Avoidance: Why Youโre Not Looking at Your Numbers
Whenโs the last time you really looked at your bank account? Not the one-eye squint. Not the โclose the app before it loads.โ Actually looked. ๐
If your stomach just dropped a little, this episode is for you. ๐
This week on Financial Reset with The Finance Angel, Katelyn gets real about money avoidance: what it looks like, why your brain does it, and how to start looking at your numbers again without spiraling. She shares her own story of the payday-advance-app cycle, hiding behind BNPL, and the embarrassment of struggling with money while holding degrees in accounting and finance. ๐ฎโ๐จ
In this episode:
โจ The sneaky signs of money avoidance (unopened mail, notifications off, guessing your balance)
๐ง Why avoidance is protection, not a character flaw: money scripts + the โostrich effectโ
๐ Why some financial stress is structural, not behavioral
๐ธ What paycheck advance apps really cost (spoiler: triple-digit APRs)
๐ฅ Katelynโs hot take: donโt jump from monthly to daily check-ins
๐ช The 7-step โMoney Peek,โ a gentle routine to start looking again
๐ Why seeing your money in more than one way can calm the fear
๐ฟ How to step down from the advance-app or BNPL cycle without quitting cold turkey
๐ Journal prompts + this weekโs affirmation
๐ฌ This weekโs affirmation: โI am safe to look at my money. My numbers are information, not a judgment of my worth.โ
๐ง Missed the last few? Pair this with Episode 31 (Buy Now, Pay Later) and Episode 33 (When Spending Is Emotional).

๐ Looking is brave. Peeking counts. See you Wednesday.
Ever caught yourself thinking "I'm already broke, might as well buy it?" You're not alone, and you're definitely not broken. This week we're talking about the emotional side of spending: the shame spirals, the "responsible on paper but drowning underneath" feeling, and why willpower alone was never going to fix this.
I also get vulnerable about my own money storyโฆ specifically the "future me will figure it out" mindset I had with my student loans back in undergrad, and the very real math lesson double-digit interest rates taught me later. ๐ธ
We're pushing back on the idea that emotional spending is just a discipline problem, and talking through what actually helps. Including when it might be time to loop in a licensed therapist alongside your financial reset.
๐ You are allowed to grieve a hard financial season. You are also allowed to be proud of how far you've already come.

Ever download a budgeting app with the BEST intentionsโฆ use it beautifully for nine daysโฆ and then just stop? No drama, no big triggerโฆย you just stopped? ๐ This one's for you.
In this episode of Financial Reset with The Finance Angel, Katelyn is talking ADHD and money โ the dopamine-chasing spending cycles, the "I'd rather be broke than ask for help" pride spiral, and why consistency can feel like an uphill battle even when you want it so badly.
Spoiler: it's not a willpower problem. It's brain chemistry. ๐ง โจ
What we cover:
๐ธ Why ADHD brains are wired to chase immediate reward over long-term goals
๐ฎโ๐จ A personal story about the first time my spending caught up with me
๐ซ The common budgeting advice I don't fully agree with (hint: stop forcing yourself into a template that doesn't fit)
โ The 3 categories to start with when every other system has failed you: income, expenses, and savings & extra debt payments
๐ Why your "reset" doesn't have to mean starting completely over
๐ซถ A reminder that some of this struggle is structural, not just personal โ and that matters

๐ You are not broken. You are not lazy. Your brain just needs a system that works with it. See you next Wednesday.
Okay be honest with meโฆ have you ever looked at your bank account and thought "wait, that's not right," scrolled back, and found four or five little Klarna/Afterpay/Sezzle charges that all hit the same weekend? ๐ If so, you are SO not alone, and this episode is for you.
This week we're talking about buy now, pay later, and why something that feels so small and harmless at checkout can quietly become one of the most disorienting things in your financial life. Because BNPL doesn't ask you to think about your total balance. It only ever asks about the payment in front of you, right now. So you end up with five or six little installment plans stacked on top of each other, none of them talking to each other... until payday, when your paycheck is suddenly a lot smaller than you thought. ๐ธ
This one is personal for me. I used to use BNPL for pretty much everything, and I wasn't tracking what I owed across all the different apps. I regularly ended up with little to no money to actually live on, and it took me a long time to realize the low-grade dread I was carrying was financial anxiety, coming directly from not knowing what I owed. I've since broken that cycle (slowly, imperfectly, and it took longer than I wanted it to), and I feel more stable than I have in a long timeโฆย not because I have more money, but because I finally have visibility.
We also get into the messaging around BNPL as a "smart budgeting tool", and why I actually disagree with that framing when it comes to wants, while holding space for the reality that for some people, BNPL is genuinely how groceries get bought this month. That's structural, not a character flaw, and it deserves to be talked about honestly.
What we cover in this episode:
๐น How the BNPL "loan stacking" cycle actually works (and why it's built that way)
๐น My own experience losing track of BNPL payments, and the financial anxiety I didn't have a name for yet
๐น Why I push back on the "BNPL is a budgeting tool" narrative ๐น The real distinction: not whether you use BNPL, but why, and whether you can see the whole picture
๐น A step-by-step way to audit every active BNPL plan you have ๐น Why breaking this habit takes time, and why that's okay
If any part of this hit close to home,ย I hope it also reminded you that this is one of the easiest cycles to fall into, and that noticing it is already the hardest part done. ๐

Let's be honestโฆ the standard emergency fund advice was not written for people whose emergency never really ends.
"Save three to six months of expenses." "Only touch it for true emergencies." Great advice in theory. But when you're living with a chronic illness, a recurring health condition, or ongoing medical needs, that framework starts to crack. Because when your "emergency" is just... Wednesday? You need a different plan.
In this episode, we're getting real about what emergency savings actually look like when your body doesn't follow the rulebook. We're talking about the shame spiral that comes with watching your carefully built savings drain month after month, why your recurring health costs do NOT belong in your emergency fund, and how to build something that actually works for your real life, not someone else's.
This one is personal. I've been in the place where my FSA was fully spent and every extra dollar was going straight to medical needs just to function. And I want you to know: if things go sideways during a health episode, that is not failure. That is just what happens sometimes. You rebuild. Slowly. Compassionately. One transfer at a time. ๐
What we cover in this episode:
๐น Why traditional emergency fund advice doesn't account for chronic life
๐น The difference between recurring health costs and true emergencies
๐น How to build a medical float (separate from your emergency fund)
๐น Why I keep my emergency fund at a completely different bank
๐น The emotional weight of spending more on healthcare than your peers
๐น A realistic, compassionate action plan you can start today
You are worth every single dollar that goes toward your care. Let's build something that reflects that. ๐

๐ธ Ever gotten a raise and thought, "okay, NOW things are going to be different"... only to find yourself wondering where all the money went a few weeks later?
Yeah. We need to talk about that.
In today's episode, we're getting into one of the most frustrating (and most common) money experiences out there: feeling broke no matter how much you make. And friend, if that sentence hit you somewhere deep, this episode was made for you.
We're breaking down the real reasons your income keeps disappearing before you can do anything meaningful with it, and spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with being bad with money or not working hard enough. It has everything to do with lifestyle creep, invisible money leaks, and spending that hasn't been intentionally lined up with the life you actually want.
In this episode, we cover:
โจ What lifestyle creep is and why it's so sneaky (hint: it doesn't feel like a problem when it's happening) โจ The psychology behind why more money doesn't automatically mean more freedomโฆ hedonic adaptation is a real thing โจ How your money might be doing things without your permission. Hello, forgotten subscriptions โจ Why the feeling of "broke" is data, not your identity โจ A simple reset framework to get your spending back in alignment โจ The emotional side of overspending and what it's actually telling you
This is your reminder: you are not broken. Your budget might just need a reset. And that is 100% fixable. ๐

๐ง ๐ธ Be honest... when was the last time your finances made you feel genuinely okay? Not just manageable, but actually okay? For a lot of us, money stress isn't a once-in-a-while thing. It's the 3am spiral. The stomach drop when you check your account. The smile you paste on at dinner while your brain is running numbers in the background. In Episode 28, we're going there โ because the connection between your money and your mental health is real, it's documented, and it is absolutely not your personal failure.
We talk about what financial stress actually does to your brain and nervous system, why shame keeps so many of us white-knuckling our situations alone, and the very real economic reality that people our age are up against: starter homes averaging over $300,000, wages that haven't kept pace, and a cost of living that makes "just budget better" genuinely insulting advice. We also cover what financial anxiety actually looks like day to day (hint: it's sneakier than you think), practical tools for moving through it, and a community idea I'd love your input on. ๐

Here's something nobody really tells you when you start working on your finances: the first shifts you feel aren't in your bank account. They're in you. ๐
In this episode of Financial Reset with The Finance Angel, we're getting real about what actually changes when you do the work โ not the highlight reel version, but the quiet, internal shifts that sneak up on you before the numbers ever catch up.
I'm sharing something personal in this one ๐ โ how I went from using buy now, pay later for almost everything to it being completely a thing of the past. Getting to the other side of it changed how I relate to my money in a way I didn't expect. Less "wait, why is there $60 less in my account than yesterday?" ๐ More clarity. More peace.
We're also into one of the biggest finance tips I push back on โ the idea that you need to tackle everything at once to make real progress. Spoiler: you don't. Burnout is real, and we're not doing that here. ๐ We're building something sustainable.
And if you've been watching someone else hit a milestone that feels far away? This episode is for you. Your timeline is your own. Your chapter 3 is not their chapter 12. ๐
๐ In this episode: โ What "doing the work" actually looks like โ Why internal shifts come before external results โ My personal BNPL experience (it was harder than expected ๐ฌ) โ Why going full steam ahead often leads to burnout โ Signs the work is working even when you can't see it yet

Have you ever gotten paid and felt dread instead of relief? Like the money hit your account and you almost didn't want to look at it โ because somewhere, deep down, you already knew it would be gone before you could blink?
Yeah. Me too. And in this episode, we're finally talking about it.
Episode 26 of Financial Reset with The Finance Angel is all about the financial audit โ not the scary, spreadsheet-induced kind, but the kind that actually helps you understand the story your money is telling about your life. We're going section by section through your spending, sitting with how each expense makes you feel, and asking the real question: does this align with who I actually am right now?
I'm sharing my own experience going from paycheck-to-negative every single month โ Starbucks every morning, forgotten subscriptions, lashes, food delivery, Buy Now Pay Later plans, all of it โ and how taking a psychology of money course cracked something open for me that no budget spreadsheet ever could. My audit is still ongoing (and probably always will be), but I am no longer making money decisions from a place of anxiety. And that shift changed everything.
We also talk about why cutting out ALL your fun spending in the name of debt payoff is a recipe for burnout โ and why celebrating your progress, even with just $20 or $30, is not irresponsible. It's how you actually make lasting change.
In this episode:
Why payday anxiety is a thing (and what it's really telling you)
How to approach your finances by sections of your life instead of one overwhelming number
The values alignment check: does this expense actually reflect who you are?
Why rewards and self-celebration are part of your financial strategy, not opposed to it
Three action steps you can take this week without spiraling
This is your permission slip to look at your money โ with curiosity, with kindness, and without shame.

Have you ever looked at your bank account and thoughtโฆ where did it all go? You didn't do anything dramatic. You didn't make some big, irresponsible purchase. But somehow, money just keeps disappearing โ and you can't quite figure out why.
That's what money leaks are. Not the big stuff. The quiet stuff. The automatic charges you forgot you signed up for. The fees you've been paying so long they feel normal. The lifestyle upgrades that crept in so gradually you didn't even notice they happened. In today's episode of Financial Reset with The Finance Angel, we are breaking all of it down โ and more importantly, we're talking about what to actually do about it.
Here's something I have to be honest about: I forget to cancel free trials way more often than I should probably admit. Every other month, I lose $65 or more on a charge I fully intended to cancel and justโฆ didn't. And I talk about money for a living. So if it happens to me, it can absolutely happen to you โ and there is zero shame in that.
We go through the five most common money leaks: forgotten subscriptions, banking fees you don't have to pay, lifestyle inflation that crept up on you, carrying a credit card balance, and unused memberships and service add-ons. We also dig into the psychology behind why these leaks happen โ because it's not about being careless. It's about how our brains are wired.
And I push back on the advice that every lifestyle upgrade is irresponsible. Not all of them are. Intentional spending is not the same as wasteful spending. The goal is awareness โ knowing what you're paying for and making sure it's actually what you want to be paying for.
By the end of this episode you'll have a simple Money Leak Audit framework you can do in an afternoon, and a plan for what to do with the money you free up. The lightbulb moment is waiting. Let's get into it.
