For this week's podcast and video, I have a truly empowering interview with Kim Davis for you. Kim is a seasoned counsellor, yoga teacher and career & business coach who specializes in helping people to start their business in their 50s!
I often think when people are in their 50s or 60s, they are in their Golden Age, as they have accumulated some real-life experiences, skills and they have faced a few challenges as well as built up some important relationship over time. Now they are at a place where they know who they are, what they want (or don't want!) and still have the energy to do great things. They may start thinking about retirement from their current job or maybe facing fewer family obligations (children are grown up & independent), they can really start a fresh new chapter if they want to.
However, finding the courage to step outside from their comfort and confidence zone and to move forward into a new direction can be very challenging. Therefore, once again lead to my most common advice: Just one small step at a time. You just gotta move forward.
Last week in my blog The Fear of Not Being Enough, I talked about how over-thinking and analysis paralysis can stop us from moving towards where our hearts want to take us. We feel doubtful, worried and sacred by the "What If We Fail" thoughts.
When we do that, we give our power away and we drop our chances.
More often than not, it is because our vision is SO BIG and WONDERFUL and it can be overwhelming to imagine what it may take to get us THERE.
But if we just focus on 1 small action at a time, we will be on our way and the anxiety we feel will also start to disappear.
The problem is, we tend to underestimate the power of taking small actions consistently.
We are constantly searching for big breaks and quick wins, but in fact, it is the small steps that prepare us to take on the big jumps or leaps when the opportunity arises.
Also, whatever we think our destination is, it may shift ever so slightly or dramatically when we get closer to it.
We would be at a different vantage point later down the track and change what we think or feel about what is best for us.
BUT remember, we have to go on that track in the first place.
We must listen to our instinct instead of our fear, and to take actions no matter how small.
Fulfiling your dreams and vision
Kim is in her 60s and I love what she said in the interview, "Youth has a lot in its favour". When she was in her late 20s, she participated in a youth leadership program and got inspired to go with a group to create "World Youth", a charity foundation that is still running today. The group had a dream to change the world but they were not sure how to do that. The youth group went to Nepal and saw the needs of the local people and they decided to take on several community development projects. Eventually, they built a school for young children with 500 students and a home for orphans with over 50 children living there today.
They had a dream, a vision. They took small steps towards that direction.
In Kim's words: "We were passionate and hopeful. We just kept going and be playful while doing serious and meaningful work. We were not stressed or worried about what is going to work or not,
