Today we are discussing how to deal with scams. I picked this subject because within the last two weeks, I have been targeted by three separate schemes, all ridiculous in concept, but it dawned on me that if within such a short time I get targeted repeatedly, others are dealing with this. Unfortunately, most of the time, these cowards target the elderly, someone who doesn’t understand the legal system that is way more trusting than I am. So I figured it would be best to cover this topic by going over how to avoid being targeted, how to deal with scammers, and what to do if you do fall for a scam.
If you've been the victim or targeted by a scam
If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with the IRS and you owe tax or think you may owe tax, do not give out any information. Call the IRS back at 1.800.829.1040 to find out more information.
You can also contact TIGTA to report scam calls by calling 1.800.366.4484 or using the “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” form on their website.
You may also want to report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission by using the “FTC Complaint Assistant” to report persons pretending to be from the government; please add “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.
Call your local law enforcement agency.
