Daisy Majesty, Queen of Tarot
Another fine entry in the Spirits series. Alice Duncan never fails to please with her plucky heroine, Daisy Gumm Majesty.
Daisy lives in Pasadena, shortly after the end of World War I. Her husband was gassed in the trenches, and can no longer work, so Daisy has to work to support him and the rest of her family. As far as Daisy is concerned, when the only employment choices for a woman are as a maid, a cook, a bookkeeper, or a spiritualist...well, bring on those tarot cards!
Daisy is a lovable character, loyal to her friends and family, and stubborn to a fault when facing a problem. When she conducts a seance, speaking with her contact on the other side, Rolly, she has no trouble convincing her wealthy patrons of the truth of Rolly's pronouncements. Of course, she doesn't mention she invented Rolly when she was a child.
In FINE SPIRITS, Daisy is called to the home of one of her patrons because there is a ghost in the basement--or so the woman says. Naturally, Daisy doesn't say she's quite sure there is no ghost; she simply investigates and tells her patron she will exorcise the ghost.
What she finds is not a ghost...but what she DOES find is something that requires her help and attention. And also puts her in a position that could end up with her going to jail. Nevertheless, Daisy is nothing if not loyal, and once she commits to something, she gives it all she's got.
Daisy's character leaps off the page. She is so much fun, so down-to-earth, so helpful, you'll want her as your best friend. If you're in trouble, you'll want her on your side. And if you need your tarot cards read, she's the one you'll want to go see! I can't wait to read the next one in the series!
Great character!
Okay, downloaded the first book in this series to my Kindle Fire because I'm laid up after surgery, desperate for entertainment, and thought it was a nothing more than frivolous puff piece from the description and no wonder Amazon was giving it away for free. But, I was VERY wrong and now I'm hooked on Daisy Gumm Majesty! Our heroine, "spiritualist" Desdemona (" who would believe a spiritualist named"Daisy?") turns out to be a very complex young lady.
Set in the very familiar city of Pasadena, but immediately after World War I, 17 year old Daisy had impulsively married her very engaging childhood sweetheart just before sending him off to war in Europe, only to have him return some years later as a severely damaged and embittered invalid, and Daisy is forced to change a childhood entertainment with the Ouija board into an adult career to support her family. And in serving as psychic counselor to the very wealthy residents of Pasadena, Daisy encounters -and solves- some serious mysteries.
