As he drove his chief down to Kidlington, Lewis returned the conversation to where it had begun.

'Death is always the next-door neighbour,' said Morse sombrely.
The murder of a young woman... A cryptic 17th-century love poem... And a photograph of a mystery grey-haired man...
More than enough to set Chief Inspector E. Morse on the trail of a killer.
And it's a trail that leads him to Lonsdale College, where the contest between Julian Storrs and Dr Denis Cornford for the coveted position of Master is hotting up.
But then Morse faces a greater, far more personal crisis....

A Very Enjoyable Read
In the past 38 years I have watched the entire 32 episodes of Inspector Morse at least 4 times. But I have not read the books they were based on until this one.
This book was immediately recognize able as the one where two Oxford dons are running for college master.
It is very well written full of interesting words and Latin phrases and is very similar to the PBS tv shows.
Having read the book, I am even more impressed by the performance of John Thaw and Kevin Whately in the films. Overall an excellent book.
While certainly not one of the very best Inspector Morse books
While certainly not one of the very best Inspector Morse books, Death is Now My Neighbor checks off all the boxes for a satisfying mystery read.
Pithy commentary by the Inspector? Check.
Resigned acceptance of his superior's eccentricities by the Detective Sergeant? Check.
Plot twists and red herrings? Check.
Examination of the human condition by all the actors? Check.
Satisfying resolution that punishes the wicked and rewards the plucky? Check.
On the other hand, I enjoyed the film adaptation a little more. Fewer characters to keep track of and the priceless expression on Morse's face when he realizes he's wrong. That's something not even Colin Dexter can capture in words.
Why and how did this murder happen? I'm enjoying reading this series !!
We are given so many choices. There are characters abounding and motives that seem elusive, and then motives abound, butl suspects dying! As usual Colin Dexter has delivered us a who-done-it that leaves us wanting to read more. Chief Inspector Morse is dealing with his health that sidelines him for a few days, while Lewis is running around collecting all the evidence. Lewis shines and is finally told so by Morse. The Inspector Morse series is one you will again just for the fun.
Good solid mystery
If you're a fan of the old Inspector Morse mysteries on Masterpiece Mystery starring John Thaw, you will love these books on which they were based. The books are richly evocative of Oxford and British culture of the sixties. The dialogue is even more infused with academic detail about literature and classical music than are the TV scripts. The mystery follows a strong narrative line leading to a logical conclusion, not predictable, but not involving a deus ex machine or a last minute revelation which could not have been predicted by an attentive reader. I will definitely be reading more Colin Dexter.
A Mystery with Masters and Dons
As Morse lives in Oxford, it's always fun when the mystery includes the world of Oxford dons and masters. Two Oxford dons are vying for a master's position.
