straight forward psychological thriller

I am not sure how she did it, but P.M. Prior was able to create so much tension ans suspense in 57 minutes, than I think I have ever felt with a novella.

This was a very attention grabbing abduction, not alien abduction, but psychopath man abducts female law enforcement officer story. And asks us this question, How far would you go to save your life?. Would you do the things that, those you are expected to capture, do on a regular basis? Would these actions have anything weight on your soul and emotional well being? All of these questions will be answered by P. M. Prior in The Basement.

This was a very intense and straight forward psychological thriller. Lots of suspenseful moments, err, really one or two really long moments. I am pretty sure that P.M. Prior was able to capture the emotional turmoil that one would go through in such a situation.

While Elizabeth Klett is not a newcomer to the audiobook narration world, this is the first time that this reviewer has ever heard her. I must say that her performance was pretty good. She sounded like she could have been a special agent, meaning not too young or old sounding, but just right. She was able to inject just the right amount of terror in her voice to make it believable, again not too much and not too little. The characterizations for the male characters was not very good, however at least Klett tried. They were different enough for an audible queue of the character change in dialog and, really, that is all that matters. Kletts tonal fluctuations were more than enough to make up for the lack of pacing changes. I am eagerly waiting more for Klett as I think she is just going to get better and better.

Great read

I had read this book years ago and enjoyed it. I must say that listening to it gives it a whole different experience. I very much liked Suzan's narrative. I was gifted this book by the author with the understanding I would leave an unbiased review.

Jonnie Jacobs is in transiting better to best now, I like Murder Among us and Jacobs other books Motion to Dismiss and The only suspect too. Story begins when good hearted Kate stops to help as girl in rainy night and kidnapped ..murder all makes story a well-blended garam masala mystery. I found book suspenseful and very hard to put down. Story travels seamlessly past to present, back to forth not only with main character Kate also her fiancé Michael. Big thumbs up for narrator Suzan Lynn Lorraine.

Smoke was very dense!!

This book is not a patch on Simon's regular novels.

i was bored with its slowness and poor story line. i nearly gave up many times it did not motivate me to listen at every opportunity like a good book should.

But what is memorizing is the human angle, how the personhood of the characters is effected by the extraordinary events they are subjected to in strife torn Gaza. From some of the banalities of everyday life to the extraordinary moments captured in the closing pages the main players (already engaged in very high minded stuff in the world of national security) are real and compelling. The plot may seem linear, but it is a necessary evil offset as it is artfully interwoven among the protagonist's viewpoints.

Clear good guys and clear bad guys are there, but in short supply, which is perhaps it's best touch of realism for such a sensational plot.

Realism and intrigue combine to form the single best spy novel set in the Middle East

David Rose takes you into the tumultuous Middle East of today in this gripping spy tale. Unlike other spy novels, the realism here is compelling. I had the privilege of reading this book before it came to the US. At the time, I had limited understanding of Gaza and the turmoil that existed there. The characters helped me to appreciate the extraordinary danger of the area.

Another great adventure!

This book is another great adventure for the Saint; this time back in Nazi-torn Europe. Although I was able to figure out one of the Unholy Ones right away, this still had a lot of surprises that kept me engaged.

Fun story with the scoundrel Saint in pre WW2 Europe

Fun novel as are most of the "Saint" series. Lovable scoundrel who always comes-out-ahead of the bad guys. Set in pre WW2 Europe, with bad-guy Nazi's.

Standard Saint -

Not a good book. I dropped it about 1/4 of the way through.

I have read all of the Saint books in the series-with the exception of this book. It is the worst book in the Saint series. Unfortunately, the writer lacked all of the charm, wit and style of Leslie Charteris.

The book is written too simply to keep my interest. It was choppy and too predictable. I put it down when the Gestapo agents that the Saint was supposed to be on guard for sneaked right up on him.

I do not recommend this book. The rest of the series if far better.

This was the very first Saint book I read, thanks to a library book sale, and thanks to a lack of reading material at my hometown library, it may be the last for a while. But still- read it. If you've never heard of the Saint, except for the terrible plotless movie that bears no resemblance to the books, read it anyway. It may not be the best in the series, and who am I to say so, but after reading this I have come to one conclusion: I think I am in love with Simon Templar.

Terrible Narrator

The written version of this Brianna Sullivan mystery is probably a decent read, nothing great but a good enough story. Unfortunately since replacing the old narrator Wendy Tremont King with Lisa King the listening experience has seriously declined. She reads in a stilted monotone with very little difference in tone or inflection. I'm just sorry I neglected to listen to the sample provided by Audible.

Short but packed with electricity!

I really enjoy this series! The mysteries are well-crafted and the narration fits the personality of Brianna, the reluctant psychic, very well!

The English accent makes it even more believable, I actually did read the book before but the nuance and pronunciation make it worthwhile to listen. It brings out a new side to the story

I totally recommend this book to any lover of this genre.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Deviance?

When the protagonist and her companion entered the slaughter house I could feel the fear as though I was right there experiencing it moment-by-moment.

It was so real that I needed to stop the car and listen to the words with an urgent need to learn the fate of the missing girl.

The suspense was spellbinding as was the entire book.

The London Psychic Books is an amazing series that is not to be missed if your love this genre. J.F. Penn is fast becoming one of my favorite authors

This is a book that takes you my surprise.

It sets the scene step-by-step building suspense and introducing each character to the point where you feel that you know them personally.

This author is a supreme story teller that you should take every opportunity to listen to her Audible versions I loved this recoding because I was able to listen to it while driving and continue listing when I got home without stopping. It was so addictive I spent almost a whole day listening to it thankfully it was my day off so I could take the time to indulge myself.

What did you love best about Deviance?

While I apologize for the above alliteration (ha, I did it again!) - I hold my words to be true - J.F. Penn's dedication to detail in history, sex without sleaze, and the mysteries of this world and others make it a very enticing story. The audio book is a nice companion to the book, if you want to switch between the two, and read in the very tony voice of Ms. Ashford.

Another Rendell Classic

Fascinating character study of a modern psychopath.

Unfortunately the style of narration ruins it in my opinion, resembling as it does that of a nursery school teacher endeavouring to keep the attention of his or her infant charges. I found it both annoying and a distraction from the text.

A great pity.

Dark Corners

This novel, published posthumously in 2015 marked the end of Rendell's rich and insightful writing career, which was a tragedy for me and millions of other loyal fans. Once again, the Queen Of The Psychological Thriller writes about her favourite subjects: psychopaths residing in the gentrified areas of Maida Vale and the entwined lives of a disparate number of people.

I did enjoy it and pretty much raced through the story, playing it out loud whilst completing my chores. The characters were pretty well drawn, well, apart from the antagonist Dermot, who seemed to be taken from Rendell's back catalogue of social misfits.

Ric Jerrom's silkily sardonic narration was as excellent as ever. He really manages to install a sense of Menace with his subtle vocal nuances.

A Crime Story Unlike Anything Else Out There

This novel is a literary tour through the drug alleys and strip clubs of San Francisco's North Beach and Tenderloin. With an amazing descriptive verbosity slightly reminiscent of Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid and a sense of hellish despair that has been likened to William Burroughs, Morgan has peopled this novel with the most unforgettable and tragic characters line Rings And Things who acquired her nickname after a three day drug addled sojourn with a motorcycle gang, only to wake up with every inch of her tattooed and every orifice and protrusion pierced and adorned with jewelry. The story centers around a vicious killing and how one strip show barker by the name of Joe Speaker accidentally got involved. And about how he found himself swallowed into the prison system like Jonah being swallowed by the whale.

It is an intimate portrait of drugs and prostitution and crime and those who fell into the life and never found their way out. It is also a chilling portrait of life inside California's notorious prisons and how Joe managed to survive doing his time day by day.

There are almost no books to compare this one to because it is so unique. But it is powerfully good and really takes the reader into this strange world.

Unfortunately, Morgan who was a character in his own right, will never produce another novel. The former fiancé of Janis Joplin, who worked as a strip show barker and did hard time in prison, killed himself and a woman he was with after drinking and driving in the Big Easy.

This is a thick, dense book and is just an amazing work.

another good read. I had trouble stopping so I could eat or go to bed. facts and details were accurate and I was not able to guess the ending.

I don't think the beast's belly can get any lower.

I'm not normally a fiction reader but even though "Homeboy" was copywrited in 1990 I ordered and read it because I came across a recent reference to the novel that indicated it was about San Francisco. Oh yes-it was about The City and although I had lived there many years ago and could still recognize the street names and neigborhoods that was the extent of my recognition. Seth Morgan penetrates the belly of the beast to an extent that his San Francisco and later California, might just as well be on the dark side of the moon in terms of it's familiarity to what I knew of SF.

I know little about fiction writing but I can say that Morgan organized Homeboy differently than the other fiction works I've read.
