Current President of the Young Women’s Caucus for Art Abigail Tembreull and soon-to-be President Elle Rowe stopped by Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about the future of the club. The Young Women’s Caucus for Art is a club that primarily works towards promoting women in the art world, but don’t let the name fool you, the club is open to all genders.

With Easter right around the corner, campus pastor Soren Schmidt visited Finlandia Fridays this week to promote the multitude of events taking place within the next month. To kick of the episode, Schmidt made an announcement about the Good Friday service that will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Saint Matthew. The service will be an “all-in-one” service to celebrate the sacred holiday of Easter. Doors will be open to all students and any community members who would like to come and celebrate.

Assistant Professor of Biochemistry Dr. Emily Geiger stopped by Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about the biology degree offered at FinnU. This is Dr. Geiger’s second year of teaching at Finlandia. Upon her arrival, both science labs had been newly renovated, thanks to Portage Health System. With the renovations, Dr. Geiger mentioned that students now have their own individual work spaces, and more classes can be offered, like organic chemistry, due to the upgraded equipment.

Soon-to-be nursing graduate Alison Patchel visited Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about her experience at Finlandia, as well as her plans for the future. Patchel is originally from Marysville, a town in the Southeastern part of Michigan. She loves living in the Copper Country because of her love for the outdoors, and said the best time to be in the Copper Country is the summer, when so many students unfortunately decide to go home.

Finlandia Fridays dove into the criminal justice program this week with Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Dr. Richard Gee.“The criminal justice program at Finlandia is unique in that we we don’t do any of the stuff that you would get at a police academy or a corrections academy. Instead, what we do is focus on a skill set that is useful for a broad range of careers after graduation.”

Senior marketing major Kyle Niemi stopped by Finlandia Fridays this week to discuss his internship with Finnish mobile mentoring company Mesensei. Tuukka Ylälahti, the creator of Mesensei, was in an earlier episode this season, where he previewed the app and his inspiration behind it.

This week Finlandia Fridays celebrated the airing of its 50th episode with leaders of a new group on campus, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Tyler Browner and Jean Pimentel are both active members in the group and came to share their stories of how they ended up at Finlandia and what FCA has done for them.

Finlandia Fridays received a taste of Africa this week when René Johnson and Christina Krider came to talk about Service and Learning in Tanzania.

Krider is originally from North Carolina and is a senior in the nursing program. Hearing about Finlandia through softball, Krider played for two years and decided to focus on her demanding studies in the nursing program.  With her countdown set and only four months until graduation, Krider stated that she “can see the light,” and is ready to start her life doing what she has planned to do for a while. Krider heard about the Tanzania trip on her official visit before entering college. “Fredi (de Yampert, Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs) told me I could study abroad, and she told me about a few other places, but Africa is where I have always wanted to go,” mentioned Krider.

Finlandia Fridays was visited this week by the Finnish American Heritage Center’s intern Mika Tompuri. Tompuri hails from Finland, and just recently graduated with his master’s degree in English, German and teacher’s education. “After graduating I was thinking about what to do, and I noticed the National Board of Education in Finland was advertising for these internships, so I figured I might as well apply,” said Tompuri when asked how he wound up at Finlandia.

Finlandia Fridays was visited this week by musician Jonathan Rundman. Rundman is the musician in residence this year for Heikinpäivä. Originally from Ishpeming, Rundman currently lives in the Twin Cities and makes a living off being a singer-songwriter. Rundman stated that he always wanted to be a musician, even when he was little, and was glad his career kick started in the 90’s, before streaming was around. Heikinpäivä, and other small festivals, are great for independent artists because it allows the artists to increase their fan bases, mentioned Rundman.
