  • FIR B2B #61: The Care and Feeding of Fake News
We are awash in a sewer of fake news stories, and we only have ourselves to blame. It has become an epidemic, and a profitable one at that for these purveyors of click-bait that sound like the truth but are far from it. In this episode, Paul and David discuss why this has happened, who are the players who profit from these stories, and what the major web operators such as Google and Facebook can do about it.
We refer to several stories that show the problem first-hand: a piece that ran on NPR’s All Things Considered found one fake news operator who manages to make a solid living (think $120k per year, at a minimum) who operates out of his suburban SoCal home. His name is Jestin Coler and he is the founder and CEO of a company called Disinfomedia. His stock-in-trade is typo-squatted domains such as the Denver Guardian, which look like legit newspapers. He says he got into fake news around 2013 to highlight the extremism of the white nationalist alt-right, even though he is more liberal-leaning.
The New York Times has also met with fake news purveyors, and it tracks the progress of a viral fake news item in this piece.  Facebook CEO Zuckerberg wrote this piece about what Facebook’s responsibility should be, but Paul and David agree that it is everyone’s task to be a bit more discerning, and take a moment to think about what you’ve just read before you share it with your entire social clan.
One solution is a better mousetrap, so to speak. These computer science undergrads took a weekend at a Princeton hackathon and coded up a Chrome browser plug-in that would allow easier commenting and identifying a fake item. Kudos to them!
In that vein, John Borthwick and Jeff Jarvis posted this extensive list of recommendations on Medium of what each of us can do to take charge and try to stop the fakers. It will take a village to lessen the flow of the fakers.

  • FIR #64: That’s not our shark!
Chris Abraham, Cindy Crescenzo, and Steve Farnsworth join host Shel Holtz to talk about these topics:

    * Breitbart News called for a boycott of Kellogg’s after the cereal company pulled its ads, then started publishing articles critical of the company after calling the decision to withdraw advertising “censorship.” Is this the new reality for companies making what used to be simple business decisions?
    * Employee engagement surveys aren’t worth much anymore according to one expert, since people are more concerned about survey scores than addressing engagement issues. Is it time to stop measuring engagement?
    * Virtual Reality headset sales aren’t setting any records. Can public relations help make it go mainstream?
    * With the Amazon Echo and Google Home, along with Siri and Google Now, it’s fast becoming a voice-driven world. Brands and agencies will have to adapt.
    * A lot has happened on the fake news front since we first reported on it, including a shooting in Washington, D.C. by a North Carolina man “self-investigating” a fake news story. We’ll bring you up to date.
    * Brands have jumped on the emoji bandwagon, but audiences think they’re trying too hard.
    * Figuring out what people are talking about using Google Trends is a better way to do real-time marketing.
    * Dan York reports on the Internet Governance Forum this week in Mexico, a panel last week on Internet fragmentation (which communicators don’t want), and WordPress’s move toward promoting more SSL/TLS.

  • The Crisis Show #120: Ohio State University Attack
Rich Klein was joined by Felix Nater  (Nater & Associates) and Timmian Massie (Health Quest) to analyze  the communication and security/law enforcement protocols in the aftermath of a terrorist-inspired incident on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus on November 28, 2016.
The show discussed “run, hide, fight” as well as workplace violence prevention and crisis news conferences.
Felix Nater, a workplace violence prevention and security consultant, talked about the importance of corporate and organization leaders to create a culture in which it is safe to report information about someone who may be thinking about committing an act of violence on the premises.
Timmian Massie, a veteran public affairs spokesperson for Marist College, noted that some college campuses and hospitals have unarmed security and depend largely on the local police force while others have a fully trained armed police force.
Nater pointed out that students and administrations can’t depend entirely on campus or local police when faced with a violent threat and must have their own personal plan to protect themselves.
Klein and the panel agreed that Ohio State University,  as well as spokespeople for local law enforcement and the hospital, did a good job collaborating at keeping the media informed during the crisis but Klein suggested that the president of the University seemed to rush his words at the first news conference. He said it’s always better to speak slowly and calmly in a crisis situation.

  • AMP Up #59: Michelle LeBlanc on Employee Social Media Engagement
Michelle LeBlanc is a social media strategist focusing primarily on employee engagement for B2B within the transportation and logistics industry. She began her professional journey into social media marketing amid her day to day duties in a traditional marketing position. Ultimately, the use of social media strategies stems from connecting the stories of employees with the overarching company narrative – all with the aim of achieving brand success through increased positive engagement. Michelle recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss how companies can employ social media strategies more effectively as they strive to achieve their goals.
“Engage with your employees. Empower them to engage with your customers. Build your brand through social media.”
Michelle discusses tips for using social media engagement with employees:

    * There is a need to tie current social media presence for a brand to company goals. Social Media platforms are constantly changing the algorithms for presenting content, especially advertising, whether paid or unpaid. A focused strategy can counteract this while also ensuring the company’s objectives get accomplished.
    * Build the human side of an organization through content creation. Real stories from employees shape the culture of the work environment and offers a new era of transparency into the day to day practices of your company. Social media not only allows employees to engage, but it also highlights their good work and positively impacts employee retention.
    * Think beyond the standard for employee engagement. Experiment – the unexpected can set you apart in your industry or within your company. Go further than the traditional route to better engage current audience members. For instance, have a contest that invites participation and encourages employee content creation. Use of GaggleAMP can help make it easy for employees to have their voice shared.
    * Planning is the key to social media engagement success. Take the time to make a focused plan to create one strategy and do it well. Make sure it aligns with your company’s goals to ensure effective use of the social media platform that is best suited to your company and its current campaign. Use GaggleAMP to make it convenient for employees to share your content.
    * Recognize that employees are a content gold mine. Empower them as such. Invite them to use the technology already in their pockets to provide content about the very company you want them to be proud to work for. Be open to their suggestions and make sure they know they are an integral part of the team. GaggleAMP provides a path for you to do just this while managing and tracking what is shared and by whom.

Michelle would love to hear from you! Connect with her on Twitter or through email.
