We have decided to make them public so you can watch and comment. Our next recording is Saturday, June 12 at noon ET. You’ll see our pre-recording conversation as well as seeing how the sausage gets made. Watch live here.
(You can watch the video of the making of this episode, though it’s clearly too late to share comments we can read right into the show.)
We are hosting an FIR Communicators Zoom Chat each Thursday during the stay-at-home period at 1 p.m. ET. For credentials needed to participate, contact Shel or Neville directly or request the credentials in our Facebook group or send an email to [email protected].
Special thanks to Jay Moonah for the opening and closing music.
You can find the stories from which Shel’s FIR content is selected at Shel’s Link Blog. Neville’s link blog, Outbox, is available, as well.

  • Episode 151: Protecting Your IP and Your Relationships
Last week, Sharon Toerek and I joined Chip Griffin for his weekly Small Agency Talk Show. Outside of being one of the foremost experts on how agency owners can protect themselves from a business perspective, she also is an expert on when and how to copyright your intellectual property. She also happens to be my attorney—and has helped me gain copyright and trademark rights for the PESO Model and all of its assets.
As part of the discussion, we touched on how to protect your IP and how to protect your ideas when speaking with prospects or in new business presentations. We want to showcase how smart we are by providing ideas, but (for the most part) those ideas aren’t protected if the prospect weren’t to hire us. That’s a topic for at least one podcast episode, but that’s not what we’re going to talk about today.
Today we are going to talk about why communicators are afraid to stick up for themselves, rock the boat, question authority, or ask fearless questions. Stay tuned for that on this week’s Spin Sucks Podcast episode.

And I wanted to let you know that after a hiatus of around 20 months—and all the things that have happened between then and now—Gini Dietrich, Joe Thornley and I are back recording Inside PR.
Why? To be honest we missed talking with each other about what’s new about PR, social media and digital marketing. We also missed hearing from you and being part of the FIR Podcast network community.

In our first new episode, we catch up and talk about what’s changed.
We also discussed how to establish boundaries when you don’t stray too far from the home office and ways to spark creativity.
It’s great to be back! Thank you for listening!

  • Spin Sucks 150: Out of an Abundance of Caution
If a global pandemic has taught us anything about business, it’s that communications expertise is not just necessary, it’s imperative.
Remember when the shutdown started and every organization on earth sent an email that said, “Out of an abundance of caution…”?
There was zero creativity and it was clear, in most cases, it was not written by anyone with any communications expertise.
Then we experienced a firestorm of epic proportions.
It wasn’t just a pandemic, but the economy took a nosedive, there was a global movement for not just social justice, but diversity and equality, too.
Employees began to require their employers to take a stance—and if it didn’t match their own values, they quit their jobs. At the same time, women began to leave the workforce in droves because homeschooling and working full-time was just too much.
Had I worked for a company during all of this, I too would have had to take a leave of absence. It’s A LOT.
It’s the first time in history we’ve experienced so many crises at one time—and the organizations that are emerging from the embers are those that have communications experts at the decision-making table.
And that, my friends, is what we’re going to discuss on this week’s Spin Sucks Podcast episode.
