  • FIR B2B #144: The Future of Virtual Events
While we’ve all been staying home and being virtual, Paul has done some original research and David has written this white paper for Network Solutions on helpful tips and tricks for IT pros that are involved in supporting virtual events.
The results of Paul’s informal census is that folks can’t wait to get back to F2F. We all have been in our pandemic bubbles for far too long and the urge to have human contact and serendipitous hallway meetings is a big reason to return to the rubber chicken circuit. But we’ve all learned a lot in the meantime about what makes virtual events successful. At its heart, you are putting on a live TV show with a very small staff to handle the production. You need to plan accordingly on the mixture of live and pre-recorded segments and figure out what tech you are going to use, including the video conferencing and the event management tool. (The two are different and you should understand the differences, which David explains in his paper.)
But virtual events have their purposes, including creating content that can be archived and used for marketing purposes long after the last attendee has disconnected. Unlike physical events, this content can be helpful in bringing in new customers and supporting new marketing campaigns, as well as supporting existing customers with FAQs, for example. And they can be very cost effective to produce, since you aren’t picking up huge travel and event hosting fees.

  • Spin Sucks 132: Are Half of Marketers Dropping the Ball?
I have some depressing news for you. According to a survey by StrategyBox of more than 100 CEOs, more than half aren’t convinced their marketing teams are driving results. More than half! That means for every two of you listening to this, your clients or CEOs don’t think you’re doing your job. Heck, that probably means half of our clients don’t think we are, either.
The report goes on to say that 48% aren’t convinced their teams know how to measure their performance against company goals and 49% say teams are unsure which channels are working best—or how to compare those results with their competitors.
That’s depressing. But this 2021, you all. That means there is no excuse for this. We have the tools, we have the technology, and we have the know-how to be able to demonstrate results.
On this week’s episode, we’re going to talk more about what those surveyed had to say—and what you can do about it to make sure you’re of the half whose clients or CEO thinks you walk on water.

  • Spin Sucks 132: A Podcast About Business Podcasts
It’s time to get a little meta. We’re still thinking about trends for 2021 over here at Spin Sucks and something at the top of a lot of minds in our community and elsewhere is… podcasts.
Now, you and I are clearly well ahead of the trend—you’re listening to our podcast right now. And I am the host or co-host of three podcasts. Now that I say that out loud, I realize I might have a problem.
More and more people in the communications (and every other) industry have been joining the podcast rage, and that means that there are innovations, changes, and new opportunities coming our way.
Somewhere around a flipping decade ago, Martin Waxman invited Joe Thornley and me to co-host Inside PR, a podcast started by Terry Fallis and Dave Jones. It was all pretty new back then. Podcasts were few and far between. It’d be at least three years before Serial was published, making podcasting a household name. At the time, it was just something for me to do with two really smart communicators who I got to talk to every week. Then it began to explode. As much as a podcast about communications can explode.
A couple of years ago, I added this podcast. And then Chip Griffin and I added the Agency Leadership podcast two summers ago.
It’s always fun to talk to someone on the phone or meet them at an event and have them say, “You’re in my ears every week! I feel like I know you!” Plus, it’s really good for business. I can point to at least five clients we work with that found us through podcasting.
So yeah, I’m sort of all in on podcasting.
And so is One Stone Creative, the agency we use to produce this very podcast. So much so, in fact, they created an entire report on how to use podcasts as part of a broader content marketing strategy.
They looked at what the top 100 shows in the world are doing around the length of a show, whether or not to invite guests, how often to release episodes, what kind of show notes to include, and where it should be promoted.
On today’s Spin Sucks podcast episode, we’re going to talk about podcasts—whether or not you should have one and, if so, how to construct it so you don’t sound like everyone else. So meta!
Let’s take a look at what One Stone learned in their State of the Business Podcasting report.
