Today’s guest on Fire and Adjust is Brock Heath founder of Gauntlet Development and Author of “How to Succeed in the Civilian World, For Military Veterans” Brock has a long list of accomplishments as, Business Owner, Author, Personal Coach, Career in Banking/Finance, Troy City Councilman, Dayton Business Journal 40-Under-40 nominee and named Troy’s 2012 Outstanding Man of the Year just to name a few! 

Brock and I talk about how he got into the Marine Corps and what it was like for him to transition back to the civilian world. We talk a lot about mindset and some of the great books that we both say were early contributors to the paths and decisions we have made. We get into the details of Brock’s book and the 12 Action Items proven to launch the reader toward the life they want to live. He even gives us some great tips on goal setting as well as some steps you can take today that come directly from the book

Today I got to talk with Kalen Arreola the founder of Stars and Stripes Marketing. Kalen and I got to meet at the USAA Social Exchange 2014 and served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Public Affairs Officer for ten years. She served in Operation Iraqi Freedom V supporting the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) and the 3rd Infantry Division. She has worked with embedded reporters from major news agencies, including NBC, Fox, NPR, CBN, ABC, and CBS. She also developed a successful hometown news campaign that reached out to more than 250 hometown news markets to tell the story of the American Soldier during the surge.

This is a great episode we talk about everything from what it was like in the service to some great tips on writing Press Releases and just how important networks are to your future success. Kalen tells a lot of great stories in this show and well you will just have to listen to get the good stuff!

Today I got to talk with Jonny Coreson who is still currently serving in the United States Navy. He is also the founder of Pillar Games and has his first game Quiz Hero set to launch in just a few days on December 17th. 

This episode is packed with great content we talked about everything from how Jonny got in the Navy from his hometown in Alaska to how he found a big business idea that lead to Pillar Games while studying for the board. When his fellow soldiers saw that he was able to successfully pass after just a few months when it generally takes 2 to 3 times as long.

We also talk a lot about what soldiers can and should do while still serving that can help them long after transitioning out of the military, a must-listen!

Today I got to talk with CWO Dylan Raymond who has over 25 years of service with the United States Army and continues to serve in the Army Reserves today. Dylan climbed the ranks from E-1 – E-8 where he then crossed over to the other side!

This was a great conversation where Dylan offered tips right from his book Rucksack to Briefcase. We discussed everything from transitioning to Resumes, LinkedIn, Networking, writing a book, mentors, and much more.

You might want to get a pen and paper for this one, Dylan gives some pretty good tips and advice, and he also gives his personal email address to offer help if he can but you’re going to have to listen for that one folks!

Today I got to talk with Jennifer Pilcher founder of MilitaryOneClick.com. Military One Click is one of the nation’s foremost experts on military families and is a premier online resource for active duty military, reservists, veterans, and their families.

This is one you will not want to miss, one thing we discussed was if it’s harder being a military spouse or married to an entrepreneur, and how we can let our fears hold us back from taking action. Jen shares a story with us about meeting an expecting fan of her site at a networking event and how networking and mentors have helped her along her journey.

We had a chance to also talk about the upcoming USAA Social Exchange 2014 in San Antonio Texas this upcoming Veterans Day week.

Today I got to talk with Chad Storlie the founder of Combat to Corporate. He is the author of two books and many other articles and blogs around the internet including the Harvard Business Review blog, USA Today, Military.com, and many more.

His most recent book is titled Battlefield to Business Success – applying military leadership and skills to your career and his first book is titled Combat Leader to Corporate Leader – 20 lessons to advance your civilian career. 

Chad is a US Army Veteran, where he served as a Special Forces Infantry Officer for a combined 21 years. We got to talk about how our military skills translate directly to business in the civilian world and how we can do a better job of explaining and highlighting these skills during key interviews. Chad gives a few examples of just how to do this during the interview as well as a few key skills that you may or may not have thought of before.

This one is a must listen and Chad is another guest I would like to have on again and do a deep dive into his books and advice some more. Check out his website after listening below!

Today I got to talk with Rick Yost co-founder of Veterans List, where they are helping veteran-owned businesses be found. The site is available for registration and will be live by the end of October if everything goes as planned. Rick is a United States Army Veteran and also a fellow tanker. We got to talk about how he got into the military and how his experiences have helped him launch several businesses. 

If you are a veteran with a business I would suggest registering with VeteransList.Us as soon as possible and if you’re looking for someone in your neighborhood why not find a fellow veteran and support the community that way? Rick and I also chat about the trust and bond that we all have due to our service and how that can help us along our journey.

Today I got to talk with Ben Kohlmann. Ben is currently serving in the United States Navy as a speechwriter for Admiral Bill Gortney, and we talk about how blogging and other projects help get him that position. Ben is also a combat-tested F/A-18 pilot and we got to talk some about what it’s like launching and landing on a carrier at night. 

Ben is the creator of Disruptive Thinkers, he has been an inaugural member of the Chief of Naval Operation’s Rapid Innovation Cell (CRIC), he has now started the Defense Entrepreneurs Forum and when you are done listening to the episode check out Ben and the DEF website.
