Livin' What You're Given

Fired Because of Her Age

Listen Later

At the age of 75, after decades of loyalty to her employer and multiple awards for excellence as an employee, Rebecca Danigelis was called into a management office and told this would be her last day. No notice, no warning. The reason?  According to her son, Sian-Pierre Regis, "She was fired for being too old." Even though Sian-Pierre could not get her another job, he could tell her story.  And tell her story he did. It turned out to be a story that was universal with thousands of people responding and saying this was their story too.

Through the use of terrific storytelling and photo journalism, the movie Duty Free was born. The trailer was viewed by over thirty-eight  million people and premiered in thirty theaters  in May 2021.  But this is not just a story of loss. It is a beautiful story of pivoting in unfairness of ageism while modeling honesty,  grace, beauty and love. All of these attributes define the mission of this mother and son team to dismiss the myth saying that as we age, we no longer have worth or the ability to be useful to our society.

If you see only one movie in 2021, let it be Duty Free. Details on how to do that are below on the website listed. I think you will want to hear and see this story time and time again.
