Fireside Legends, Episode 1: The World That Made Salem
Before the accusations, the trials, and the hysteria, there was a world that made them possible. In this first episode of our five-part series on the Salem Witch Trials, we step back to 1692 and ask a better question: what kind of place produces a panic like this?
We begin with the Puritans themselves. Who were they, what did they believe, and why did they see the invisible world as so present and so dangerous? Then we look at the pressure cooker of Salem Village: bitter church and family factions, a community on edge, and a frontier war that left refugees and grief on the doorstep. We also explore why the people of 1692 had seen something like this before, and what that history meant for how they read the signs around them. Finally, we visit the parsonage, where the story begins to turn from a troubled household into a full-blown crisis.
As always, we close with Fact or Fireside Tale, separating what the record actually supports from what got embellished around the fire over the centuries.
Fireside Legends takes the stories passed down around a fire, half history and half legend, and traces them back to what actually happened. Real history, real witnesses, and an honest look at how a story becomes a legend.
