1 Peter 3:13-22

How can we endure the suffering that we discussed in last week's Midweek Moment.  This passage fleshes that out.  Martin Luther said, "This is a strange text and certainly a more obscure passage than any other passage in the New Testament."  I still do not know for sure what the apostle meant.  For that reason, I brought Russell Kyzar in today to solve these issues!

The first issue is certain, when we suffer we need to continue submitting to Christ as Lord of our lives (vv. 13-17).  We need to be ready to give a defense of our faith, and we need to embrace our suffering with gentleness and respect so we are a witness to those inflicting the suffering.

Where things get difficult is in verses 18-22.  Verse 18 is one of the most beautiful verses that describe the Substitionary Atonement of Christ.

In 1 Peter 3:8-12, Peter lists five characteristics to help the Church endure suffering and support others who are suffering: unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, compassion, and a humble mind.

What do these characteristics have in common?

When we suffer at the hands of others, why is it important that we do not repay evil for evil? What are better responses?

What are some practical ways we can help others who are suffering?
