January 8, 2023. Baptism of the Lord. Year A.
When Jesus says his baptism is to “fulfill all righteousness,” we can hear him hearkening back to Isaiah’s depiction of righteousness, “to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.” Jesus’ own baptism was not for the forgiveness of sins, but a confirmation of the significance of Jesus’ name and mission—God-with-us. Likewise, though we are immersed in a baptism for the forgiveness of sins, we’re also submerged into lives of solidarity with the blind, the disenfranchised, the prisoner, and the brokenhearted.
