We are just now finishing up the Matthew 5 in our series on The Sermon On The Mount. Today we are dealing with the last part of the law that Jesus expounded upon. The law says to love your neighbor as yourselves. The religious leaders of the day made a sin of omission by making it easier on themselves by removing the "as yourselves." Then they had a sin of addition where they added to the law that they had every right to hate your enemies. That command is found nowhere in the Bible. Then Jesus totally rocked their world of thinking by telling them that they should love their enemies. Yes, He addressed the Jews of His day, but He is addressing us as well.

As we are nearing the end of Matthew 5, Jesus is expounding yet another law from God's Word, that of the law of retaliation (an eye for an eye). He takes this law of retaliation and he expounds on it for us to not be so quick to take vengeance, instead to sacrifice a little bit of our right to vengeance and forgive them, even allow it to go further. That's why we see Him tell us to turn the other cheek, give them your cloak as well, go the extra mile, and to give to the one who asks. All of these teach us that as followers of Christ, we need to let God take care of our offenses.

We need to be people who will say what we mean and mean what we say. We should be truthful enough that our word should be enough for others to believe.

We are closing out our sermon series of "Under God?" by looking into "Liberty and Justice." Another way of saying "liberty" is "grace." Another way of saying "justice" is "truth." When Jesus came to this earth, He came with grace and truth. Therefore, as followers of Jesus, we also should be going about our lives with grace and truth.
