When I think of heroes, I normally look for people who are smarter than me, stronger than me, more famous than me.  Great historical figures come to mind like Martin Luther King, Jr. whose birthday we just celebrated, or Sojourner Truth who led so many enslaved people to freedom, or even great athletes, like the 1980 USA Men’s Olympic hockey team who overcame impossible odds to win a gold medal or Simone Biles, American gymnast who overcame tremendous challenges to win a bronze medal on the balance beam.

Indeed, all those people are heroes, yet the scripture passage that we will read during worship this week, Matthew 5:1-20, describes a different kind of hero. You probably won’t read about these folks in a history book, but the world would be a much darker place without them.  Who knows, you might be one of them too.  Come and look for the real heroes with me on Sunday morning.
