While the Enterprise is delivering medical supplies to Rutia IV, Doctor Crusher gets kidnapped by a terrorist group. They use a new form of dimensional transporter which makes them impossible to trace. In the meantime the Doctor finds that the terrorists are killing themselves with their new technology and finds some common ground with their charismatic leader. Eventually the boffins on the enterprise work out how to trace the transporter signal and Crusher is rescued but not before we’ve had a sensitive exploration of freedom fighting.

Andrew gets angry, Alex is bored and James is a little defensive, all in this exciting instalment of our Star Trek: The Next Generation podcast.

The Enterprise is conducting a really thorough investigation into whether a planet  can join the Federation. “Well the Prime Minister seems trustworthy, despite the moustache” remarked Riker to Picard as they walked around the obvious set.  Unfortunately an incident occurs and a dangerous prisoner escapes which is embarrassing for everyone. Since this planet isn’t so advanced, The Enterprise says they’ll catch the rogue but he’s a crafty dude and evades capture. When he is caught, he beats up the terrible Enterprise security team before Riker sits on him. He’s a super soldier, abandoned on a penal colony after the government no longer needed him for combat. Following some chat, it’s decided this planet needs to sort out its issues before they can get a new flag.

Andrew, James and Alex talk aimlessly about an episode that they don’t even remember anymore in this exciting instalment of First Contact.

Some space bikers are destroying Federation outposts and Picard is fed up and tracks down their planet of origin and brings their sovereign on board to try and negotiate peace with these outcasts. Meanwhile Riker takes a special interest in the monarch’s chef, who appears sweet but is troubled. While negotiations make progress, Crusher discovers that there’s been a murder. Could the meek chef be an immortal femme fatale bearing a centuries old grudge?  Yes, and that makes for quite an unsatisfactory ending all around.

In their rambling chat they discuss the marketing, the use of characters as well as the plot and the villain. It also seems like the perfect opportunity to chat about Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. Any idea that money doesn’t exist in the 24th century is quickly abandoned with the discovery of the first stable wormhole which apparently leads to the Gamma Quadrant.  A number of parties come on board the Enterprise to negotiate for the rights to maintain the space bridge including a creepy dude called Devinoni Ral who for some reason Troi falls in love with after he acts like a sexist weirdo and ruffles her hair. When the Federation delegate falls ill after the Ferengi poison him, Riker steps up to the plate because he’s good at Poker…it’s not like Picard is some kind of diplomacy expert or anything. Riker then loses in the negotiations following an immoral gambit by Ral. Following an inspection of the wormhole, Data and Geordi find it’s unstable and the terminus has moved locations and is unstable and is therefore worthless and even worse,the Ferengi are stuck in the Delta Quadrant. I wonder if they’ll pop up again in a spin-off.

An away team comprising the First Officer, Head of Security and Chief Engineer beam down to an inhospitable planet close to the Neutral Zone to investigate a Romulan distress signal. With poor visibility and heavy interference they can barely see in front of their faces but they don’t operate the buddy system and Geordi wanders off on his own and falls down a hole. Meanwhile Worf and Riker find a badly injured Romulan survivor and take him to the ship and would you believe it, a big Romulan ship is on its way to cause a diplomatic incident. Crusher finds a way to treat him but the only transplant option is Worf and he refuses to help due to the whole Romulans killing his family thing. On the surface Geordi is held captive by another Romulan but ultimately they decide to work together to survive. Everything works out fine in the end but it almost didn’t.

In this week’s exciting instalment of First Contact: The Next Generation Introcast, the Enterprise investigates the debris of a battle 1000 year old space battle. Picard gets a boner for an abandoned ship and so leads the away team. Meanwhile the Enterprise starts acting a little funky, losing power and not moving anywhere, almost as though they’ve been lured into a booby trap. Despite having a huge engineering team, Geordi decides the best way to solve this is to talk to himself and then simulate a woman in the holodeck – Dr Leah Brahms who designed the Enterprise’s engines. He really bonds with her like a creepy creepster creep. What a loser. But he also solves the problem and Picard pilots the ship out of some lovely model asteroids.

In this week’s Star Trek: The Next Generation podcast retrospective, Andrew, Alex and James look back at season 3 episode ‘The Bonding’

An Enterprise away team is investigating an apparently uninhabited planet when disaster strikes and a big explosion goes off right in their faces. The team are successfully beamed up but Lieutenant Marla Aster is dead on arrival and Crusher can’t even be bothered trying to save her because she isn’t a series regular. Her son is now an orphan but luckily aliens want to adopt him and create a perfect world where he can grow up. Picard thinks this might not be healthy and he should really suppress his grief as has become the custom in the 24th century. Worf wants to bond with the kid too, because of guilt and we haven’t had a Klingon ceremony in about 2 weeks. He does that and then everything is okay…so that’s nice.
