    Luke 10:25-37 (ESV)
Stop asking WHO. Start asking HOW.

    Luke 10:25-37 ESV
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

    Text: Proverbs 22:6 ESV

If you let your kids have their way, they’ll expect to always get their way and struggle in life.

English Translations: Train up a child in the “way he should go” or “the right way”
English Translations add words not in the Hebrew: Train up a child in the “way he should go” or “the right way”
Hebrew: Train up a child in his way

Option 1: Train a child in accordance with his nature
    Proverbs 20:9 (ESV)
Waltke: the six other references to the youth characterize his way as foolish (1:4; 7:7; 22:15; 23:13; 29:15; etc.)

Option 2: Sarcastic – If you let your kids have their way, they’ll expect to always get their way and struggle in life
    Proverbs 22:15 (ESV)
    Proverbs 29:15 (ESV)

Houston Police Dept on “How to Raise a Delinquent”
Begin with infancy to give the child everything he wants. In this way he will grow to believe the world owes him a living.
When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. This will make him think he's cute.
Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21 and then let him "decide for himself."
Avoid use of the word "wrong". It may develop a guilt complex. This will condition him to believe later, when he is arrested for stealing a car, that society is against him and he is being persecuted.
Pick up everything he leaves lying around - books, shoes, clothes. Do everything for him so that he will be expecting it.
Give a child all the spending money he wants. Never let him earn his own. Why should he have things as tough as you had them?
Satisfy his every craving for food, drink, and comfort. See that every sensual desire is gratified. Denial may lead to harmful frustration.
Take his side against neighbors, teachers, policemen. They are all prejudiced against your child.
Prepare for a life of grief. You will be likely to have it.

    Proverbs 23:13-14

    1) Secure a confession,
    2) Assure of unconditional love,
    3) Acknowledge your sin and need of Jesus

    Proverbs 22:6 ESV
6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

    Proverbs 20:9 ESV
9 Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”?

    Proverbs 29:15 ESV
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

    Proverbs 23:13-14 ESV
13Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. 14If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.

Title: How to Have a Happy Marriage

    1. Be aware of how unfaithfulness starts: communication & attraction
    Proverbs 5:1-7
    Proverbs 6:25

    2. Be warned of the consequences of unfaithfulness: temporary & eternal
    Proverbs 5:8-14
    Proverbs 5:21-23

    3. Embrace the gospel: horizontal & vertical
    Proverbs 5:15-20

    Proverbs 5:1-7 ESV
My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it. And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

    Proverbs 6:25 ESV
Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes

    Proverbs 5:8-14 ESV
Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless, lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner, and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed, and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.”

    Proverbs 5:21-23 ESV
For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths. The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray.

    Proverbs 5:15-20 ESV
Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?

    Proverbs 15:16-17 ESV
Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble with it. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it.

    Proverbs 17:1 ESV
Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.

    Proverbs 20:7 CSB
A righteous person acts with integrity; his children who come after him will be happy.

    Weekend Sermon Notes
    Title: Happily Ever After
    Text: Proverbs 9:1-18
    Proverbs 9:1-18 ESV
Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” To him who lacks sense she says, “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.” Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it. The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house; she takes a seat on the highest places of the town, calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” And to him who lacks sense she says, “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.
    Proverbs 30:2-6 ESV
Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know! Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

    Weekend Sermon Notes
Title: You don’t have to social distance from Jesus
    Text: Matthew 8:1-4, 14-17 (ESV)

    Matthew 8:1-4 ESV
When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”

    Matthew 8:14-17 ESV
And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

Title: Songs of Hope - What Do You Do When Christianity Doesn’t Seem To Work?
    Text: Psalm 73(ESV)

What do you do when Christianity doesn’t seem to work?

    1. Take an eternal perspective
    2. Run to God rather than away from Him
    3. Remind yourself of the Good News

    Psalms 73:1-5 ESV
Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.
    Psalms 73:10-20 ESV
Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. And they say, "How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?" Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed the generation of your children. But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse you
    Psalms 73:23-28 ESV
Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.
