First OPC Lectures

A review of James 4:11-5:20 before the final: judging the brother, presumption about the future, the rich and the poor, and the oath.

Call the elders when you are sick, and why Elijah's passions were just like yours. Plus the explosive promise that love covers a multitude of sins.

Why "above all" guards against counterfeit God-centeredness: prayer in trouble, praise when cheerful, and the God who shares his glory with none.

Patience in poverty: why the Lord's coming is always near, why grumbling puts the poor under the same judge, and the prophets and Job as models.

The rich under judgment: hoarding, withheld wages, and the rust that will testify against you. Plus a half gallon of ice cream a week.

Against presumption in planning and against worry: the will of God's control, and why the "ideal will" for your life does not exist.

Speaking against a brother puts your word above God's law, and yourself above God. Plus Rahab, Corrie ten Boom, and when judging is righteous.

Grace for sanctification, not only justification. The Spirit who encases indwelling sin like concrete over Chernobyl..

Where wars come from: the lust within, the Tenth Commandment as heart specialist, praying in the middle voice, and Jacob who won by breaking.

Envy as the root of defeat, wisdom from below as desert, beast and devil, and why victory over sin is always instantaneous.
