The Gospel is good news to a man named Bartimaeus who though born blind was persistently hopeful that Jesus would make him see again. What type of good news are we hoping for? This week Dr. Jim Keck, in a rather elaborate (read “tenuous”) string of metaphors, compares a passage in Ephesians four to the old-time monster figures of the werewolf, zombie and vampire. But during the reformation, the idea that any line of work could be a ministry and that we are all called to live the Christian ideals in our work place began to take hold. Paul, one of the key leaders and writers of the early church, often reminds the church about what it means to be a community, to live life together, in ways that express God's love. In the third chapter to the Letter to the Ephesians Paul offers a most amazing prayer. Essentially he prays that everyone might fully know the reality of the Divine Within. Too often we think of God as some type of external object or thing. But the infinite love that is God is interfused with our soul. God is in whom we live move and have our being. Join us this weekend as we pray with Paul for a deep oneness of spirit.

The sermon title is the punchline to the silly joke that the only thing flat earthers fear is sphere itself. But joking aside, human beings are beset with a myriad of fears. Perhaps one of the most unusual aspects of Jesus is his complete lack of fear. The gospels are honest about other very human qualities he possessed like sadness, uncertainty and fatigue. But there is no sense he was ever afraid. It is love and faith that are capable of banishing our fears. Let’s follow the fearless one into a greater love.
