An institution in New York City for more than 30 years, Fishs Eddy is the place to go for dinnerware and entertaining accessories—and cheekiness. The flagship store, located on the corner of Broadway and 19th Street in a former Gorham Silver location, opened when Union Square wasn’t what it is today—in fact, founder Julie Gaines’ mother told her not to sign the lease because “Union Square will not amount to anything.” Gaines talks with HFN’s Allison Zisko about the store’s beginnings, how it has evolved and the challenges of retail today.
