Hymn to Air
Imminent, invisibleregion of light and wind, defining the arcof the hoopak's stonewith a riffle of head-high grain. It goes where it will, extending horizonsimagining water and earth and fire.Contained in its cradling, divine insufflation, the wind makes everything possible.
The childhood's elementsea of the barksof leaf and dust moteit goes where it will, abides unexpectedlyand a dozen days passbefore we rememberhow it bathes us, sustains usand halfway forgottenimagines the life of our days.
One time by the riverwhen the quietest elementmoved on the watersfragmenting reflectionand spangling the country with light, and once on a roadwhere an afternoon stormbeckoned and threatenedthe host of the air,I have stood, oh my brothers, and marveled the wind at its passing, for each day is the wake of the wind, the rich expectancyof water and leaf, the engendering flightof seed and samara;eight countries of peacedepart in a tumult of sails, and the king of the windis the king of the innocent heart.
