Five Hymns: Hymn to Memory
If we forget you, Silvanost, the fragmented vaultof birch and vallenwoodwhich is always diminishing,
If we forgetthe sorcerous towerthe black harp of the river,
If we forget you, let memory loseits imagined meaningin a net of leaves,
Let star and cenotaphcool uninhabitedand a thousand yearsunpeople the country of sleep.
Earth and water, fire and airare the seeds of the world, memory its soilwhich we do not forget.
In the days of waiting, when the seed in secrettakes root and grows, the promise of light, the nurture of air and waterfind union in memory,Silvanost, lest we forget.
And a thousand yearsand the ruin of empiresare survived by the airand the earth and the lightand water and memory, memory binding togetherthe last breath of empirewith the advent of breath.
Oh, if we forget youlet mountain and riverlet red moon and summerstill in our heartbeats, let the dream of the elvesfragment and diminish, and perpetual winternest in the skeletal trees.
