He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?). There's a lot here, so let's break it down a little.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to … be able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

Paul give us a list of qualifications for those who aspire for a leadership role in their local church. Here's the list for those who serve as pastors, overseers, or elders. Then we'll break it down:

On today's "Timothy My Son," we're going to look at the first six. Most of these will be rather brief - I hope!

One of the most challenging aspects of having a healthy, growing church is having healthy, growing leaders. If you believe as I do, that everything rises and falls on leadership, it's not hard to see why Paul approached this subject with his mentee, Timothy. These first 7 verses of the third chapter set the bar pretty high. But then again, it is for those who lead in the body of Christ.

11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

Okay - here we go again! Paul, what on earth are you talking about?

Women Will Be Saved Through Childbearing

Women will be saved through childbearing? No, they're not - they are saved the same way a man is - by acknowledging, confessing, and repenting of their sins, and believing in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

So, let's take this apart for a few minutes.

The only monarch I have ever has known has passed away at the age of 96. From all accounts, Queen Elizabeth II was a woman of faith who prayed often that the Lord Jesus would guide her in all her responsibilities, and give her strength. What I know for sure is that the Lord doesn't make mistakes when it comes to eternity, and I trust him.

With the Fall, to Eve, God said, "I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you" (Genesis 3:16).

To Adam, God said, "No more hunting and gathering! You're going to have to work to provide food for your family! There will be thistles and thorns. By the sweat of your brow you will have to work just to stay alive! And then, you will die."

And the world changed.

So man became a living being, but just as God is never alone, He knew that man should not be alone. And as good a friend as an animal can be, it wasn't good enough for mankind. So, as he had throughout the animal kingdom, God created a female to go with the male, to be not only his partner and helper, but to complete him, to be united with him, as the two would become one flesh.
