WACKY-BUT-TRUE: FAMILY FINDS HONEY DRIPPING FROM THE WALLS _ A Pennsylvania family was dealing with a few thousand uninvited, messy house guests this week. The Isabell family (in Perkasie) discovered they had a big bee problem. On Friday night, after Tropical Storm Fay moved through the area, the family found dark stains dripping down their walls. They assumed it was storm damage, but got closer to see for themselves. It was sticky. And it smelled like honey. And that’s what it was. The Isabells said they did a little detective work and traced the bees to the top of the house. They had seen a rogue bee now and then near the attic, but never thought much of it. Fun Facts
✓ Drowning, not thirst, is the leading cause of accidental deaths in the Sahara Desert
✓ Wasps get aggressive towards the end of summer because they get drunk on fermenting fruit hanging from the trees.
We’ve all dropped that freshly buttered piece of golden brown toast on the floor, yes? And many of us have contemplated whether or not to just pick it up and eat it. That’s why there’s the Five Second Rule, the completely unscientific belief that food left on the floor for less than five seconds is sufficiently ick-free. But scientists (at Clemson) “found that bacteria was transferred from tabletops and floors to the food within five seconds — that is the five second rule is not an accurate guide when it comes to eating food that has fallen on the floor.”
BUGGED BY BUGS
‘Tis the season to be bugged by bugs.
• There are over a million species of insects
• The fastest runners are cockroaches, which can move almost a foot per second. However this only translates to a little over 1 mph.
• Fleas jump 200 times their body length-like a human clearing a 70-story building.
• Grasshoppers jump 80 times their length — like a human jumping 1-1/2 football fields.
• Flea beetles 1 inch long can jump up to 2 feet — like a human jumping over 15 cars.
• A 1/2-inch click beetle can catapult about 1 foot.
• The most dangerous insects are mosquitoes, which pass on a parasite causing malaria, as well as the diseases dengue, yellow fever and certain types of encephalitis. Malaria kills a million people a year.
• The oldest group of insects are the cockroaches, dating back 300 million years.
