Job 7:1–21, Job, in his misery, gets very personal in his complaining against God. John 4:7–26, a well, a mountain, the Jews, the Samaritans.

Job 6:14–30, Job continues his harsh criticism of his inept friends. John 3:22–4:6, John testifies again about Jesus, that He is the one who is coming after him, who is much greater than him, and uses many of the same words and images that Jesus Himself used with Nicodemus in yesterday‘s reading.

Job 6:1–13, Job responds to Eliphaz, defending the rashness of his own words, and complaining about the banality of Eliphaz’s words. John 3:1–21, earthly things, and flesh, heavenly things, and the Spirit; unless you are born again of water and the Spirit, all this is forever beyond you.

Job 5:1–27, Eliphaz continues his response to Job’s complaint, which he takes as a criticism of God‘s justice. Affliction doesn’t happen for no reason at all, he argues: people reap what they sow! John 2:13–25, Jesus cleanses the temple, and identifies his own body as the true temple of the Lord.

Job 4:1–21, the first of Job’s friends answers Job with a fairly simplistic view of things: If you’re innocent, you have nothing to worry about. If you perish, it’s because you weren’t innocent! John 2:1–12, Jesus turns water into wine, The first of seven precursor signs to his own resurrection.

Job 3:11–26, Job raises is a number of very challenging questions for people who believe in a loving God. John 1:35–51, the handoff between John the Baptist in Jesus begins.

Job 2:1–3:10, Job is afflicted with tremendous physical illness, his wife encourages him to curse God, and Job himself laments that he was ever born. John, 1: 19–34, we are introduced to John the Baptist, whose witness that Jesus is the Christ, who brings the kingdom of God is pivotal in all four gospels.

Job 1: 1–22, we are introduced to the righteous Job, and the scoffer Satan. John, 1: 1–18, the magisterial prologue of the gospel of John, concerning the word that was God, the word that became flesh.

Zechariah 14:1–21, Zachariah describes the future of God‘s people in the end times, using the language of a prophet living in sixth century BC Israel. Titus 2:7–3:15, Paul exhorts Titus to pastor God‘s people to do good works, and reminds them of the power of their baptism.

Zachariah 12:1–13:9, God will give Israel a spirit of morning so that they will realize what they have done to their own God by the faithlessness. This pattern will be repeated again with Jesus, another instance where God‘s own people reject him. Titus 1: 1–2:6, The need for elders who can teach sound doctrine well, and the need to live a righteous life, so that the word of God may not be reviled.
