Receive a confession

Forgiveness is not: That’s ok, not a big deal, well there is a good excuse

It’s also not *GASP you did what?

Must see your own wickedness first:

“Anybody who lives beneath the Cross and who has discerned in the Cross of Jesus the utter wickedness of all men and of his own heart will find there is no sin that can ever be alien to him. Anybody who has once been horrified by the dreadfulness of his own sin that nailed Jesus to the Cross will no longer be horrified by even the rankest sins of a brother.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer Life Together p.118

Bonhoeffer goes on to say that you should not receive a confession unless you yourself are practicing it yourself.

Giving a Confession Part I

Corporate vs Private confession?

1st Timothy 2:5-6a

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

James 5:13-16

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Quote from Richard Foster in section “Diary of Confession” on p.149 of CoD.

St. Alphonsus Liguori “For a good confession three things are necessary: an examination of conscience, sorrow, and a determination to avoid sin.” (Quoted in CoD p.151)

Challenge: This week confess a sin to another Christian after having done those three things.
