Flint's Bacon-Wrapped-Around-Water-Chestnuts

* 1 pound bacon

* 1 can of water chestnuts

* soy sauce

* chicken livers (optional)

* toothpicks

You take the bacon and wrap half a piece around a whole water chestnut, then secure with a sliver of wood. Make a whole bunch of these buggers. Caramon wraps raw chicken guts (liver) in, too, but that's pretty gross, if you ask me. Place on a flat pan. Pour that dark salty sauce (what's its name?) over them. Put under a flame. (Broil) Tricky stuff. Wait a while. (10-15 minutes) If the smoke gets too thick, you've waited too long. Turn those buggers over and wait just a little longer. (5 to 10 on the other side) If you're not smoked out of your dwelling, then take them out and eat them. Of course, your tongue may get a little singed, but what's a few taste buds anyway?

Discussion

As always I start by collecting the ingredients. In this particular recipe there are only four, as I opted not to use the optional chicken livers because, eww. I have one pound of bacon, one can of water chestnuts, soy sauce, and toothpicks. I should’ve grabbed more water chestnuts as I had more bacon in the end. Then I just got to it. I cut the bacon in half for more manageable strips. Then I opened the water chestnuts, and one at a time, wrapped a water chestnut in bacon, using the toothpicks to hold them together. This was a bit of a time consuming process and I had more bacon in the end, so I ended up wrapping the bacon and using the toothpicks on them. I started fantasizing about different bacon wrapped delights while finishing up.

Next I arranged them on a baking tray and covered them all in soy sauce. Then I turned my broiler on high, and put them in the oven for ten minutes. After the timer went off, I removed them from the oven and turned each over with some tongs. Then I placed them back in the oven for fifteen minutes. Once the timer went off, I removed them from the oven, and placed them on a towel covered plate to soak up the grease.

Again, this is a simple and delicious snack for any table, and my family enjoyed it while playing Days of Wonder’s Ticket to Ride.
