“A Conversation with Nick Brlansky and Nick Horwat” CBJ@PIT 12/06/22
*How* pleased am I, to have both Nicks in the house: AT THE SAME TIME?! Of course I’m referring to Nick Brlansky and Nick Horwat, co-hosts of Tip Of The Ice-Burgh Podcast. Both of them are staff writers with Inside The Penguins, as well, so be sure to subscribe to all of the above; it’s must-listen / must-read stuff if you’re an avid Penguins fan. We talk Penguins hockey, professional wrestling, and, of course, my recent sending-down to the lower leagues of the Greater Cranberry PA-area Beer Beer Leagues.

There may be no mascot origin story less thought-through or more unimpressive than Louie’s. Sorry, Blues fans.
It’s a HOCKEY NIGHT!!!! Innnnnnn PITTSBURGH!!!! The Blues are here to take on Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. Last time Missouri’s NHL franchise were in town, the Pens came from behind in a tough-fought victory over a team who did just about anything they could to get under Pittsburgh’s skin - literally - including a brawl that led to a bleeding cut on the bridge of 87’s nose. It wasn’t a good game plan for Berube’s Blues, though, as the Penguins emerged with a 5-3 comeback W and, in the words of Josh Getzoff, a “2-pt Party on 5th Ave.”

“A Conversation With Liz Knox” VGK@PIT 12/01/22
Kris Letang is out, indefinitely, after suffering a second stroke. His first was back in 2014, due in part to a condition relating to his heart. Wishing Kris and his family all the best.
Today on the program I’m joined by Liz Knox, Clarkson Cup Champion goalie with the Markham Thunder and founding board member with the PWHPA. Liz and I sat down in Team Sonnet’s locker room at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, for a great conversation on all things Women’s Professional Hockey. Special thanks to Ashley Taylor for co-hosting today, as well as to Olympic Gold medalists Kristen Campbell and Genevieve Lacasse, both of whom granted me some post-game time at the Dream Gap Tour event. Thanks also to Ashley McClellan, from media relations with the PWHPA.

“A Conversation With Josh Getzoff” CAR@PIT 11/29/22
What else is there to say? I’m joined today by the play-by-play voice of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Josh Getzoff. Every time "the train reaches its station," and every night the Penguins throw themselves a "2-pt party on Fifth Ave.," you know who was behind the microphone: Josh Getzoff. The seat he holds once belonged to the Hall of Famer: Mike Lange; that fact alone tells you Getzoff is a truly remarkable, special human being. This extended conversation which I was lucky enough to have, in person with Josh, will give you a pretty good peek behind the curtain as to the origins of his career in broadcasting, as well as some non-hockey material including a fun chat we had about … music! It’s a big deal for me to have such a guest as Josh Getzoff on this podcast, so thanks for listening and continuing to tune in to Fly Penguins Fly Game-Day Podcast!! Tristan Jarry goes between the pipes for the Penguins, and many believe it’ll by Pyotr Kochetov in net for the Canes.

You’re getting an early podcast today because I’m spending the whole day up in Cranberry at the PWHPA ‘Dream Gap Tour’ event at UMPC Lemieux Sports Complex! Olympic champions like Marie Philip Poulin, Hilary Knight, and Sarah Nurse will be in the house, along with a ton of other top-tier talent from all corners of North America. When the day is done and I’ve watched TWO full games featuring some of the best women’s players ever to lace up hockey skates, I’ll probably sink into my sofa at home and enjoy the Pens game on 105.9theX.
I highly recommend a viewing (it's only 17 minutes!) of “The Dream Gap,” Directed and Produced by Camryn Kern:

“Double Lucky” PIT@PHI 11/25/22
Malkin attempted to throw his game-winning stick, up over the protective glass and into the crowd not once, but twice as he celly’d his way up the halfwall to Dan Vladar’s left. The game finally over, Malkin’s 1001st NHL tilt tucked neatly under his belt, the W secured for Pittsburgh. In the cosmic sense, Evgeni Malkin has truly done it all: Three Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe trophy, the Art Ross, the Ted Lindsay, and the Hart Memorial trophy. And there’s more, some of it perhaps yet to come. But right now, what Geno tells us he wants, more than anything, is another Stanley Cup with his Penguins. Tonight’s matchup against Philadelphia has all the makings of a Pittsburgh loss. The Flyers are on a losing streak they’d love more than anything to break, and they’ve got home ice and a nationally broadcast game as the setting for such an upset. Moreover, the Penguins are only-just-barely finding a team-wide balance, sitting as they are a single point out of the eastern conference playoff picture. Thanksgiving has come and gone, and many will tell you it’s time to sing or get off the stage, so to speak. Well, if Philadelphia is the stage, Pittsburgh has the performer best suited for it. Sidney Crosby has been going on a mega-tear of late, most recently earning the NHL’s 1st Star Of The Week honors. Philly is Crosby’s favorite point-scoring proving ground, historically, and so today’s Black Friday tilt holds more promise for 87 and his Penguins than many others might.

“1001: A Penguins Odyssey," or, "A Conversation With Shane Taylor” CGY@PIT 11/23/22
Before the puck drops tonight, the Penguins will honor the 2009 Conn Smythe Trophy-winning, three time Stanley Cup Champion, Penguin-for-life Evgeni Malkin with a special ceremony. Although 71’s 1000th NHL game already came and went, a 5-3 victory for his team, on the road in Chicago, the hometown fans have something to give Geno: A tsunami of clapping, shouting, board-pounding, foot-stomping, and whistling to be precise. The applause will last, it will echo through the rafters of PPG Paints Arena for as long as the Penguins’ current barn stands, as long as there are ice hockey games played within its property lines. Malkin, who has played his entire career both in Pittsburgh and in the shadow of one of the Hockey-Rushmore caliber Sidney Crosby, is a treasure of this franchise, of this league, and of the sport of hockey. Cherish these, the last years of what has been a magnificent career for 71.

“Evgeni Malkin’s 1,000th NHL Game” PIT@CHI 11/20/22
Last night in Winnipeg, Tristan Jarry and the Pittsburgh Penguins played hard-and-smart for the FULL sixty minutes of regulation. They got rewarded, in the form of their very first shutout victory of the season. Following a historically bad losing streak, the Pens needed two things to come together in order for the team to feel stabilized. For one, they needed to play their game for the entirety of three periods. Then they were going to need their top goaltender to ratchet-strap the payload down to the bed of the bed of the pickup, chisel the ice off the tow hitch, and get back to work. Forget the recent 7 game losing streak, because when it comes to playing on the road in Chicago, the Penguins haven't won in that barn since 2009. So on the night Geno hits the 1.000-game mark, I'm hoping we see the Penguins throw that particular monkey off their back.

The Penguins take on the Winnipeg Jets, the second in a three game road trip that already included a victory in St. Paul and concludes tomorrow at the United Center in the Windy City. Coming off that win encouraging, convincing win against the Wild, the Pens look to harness the power of Mo-vember, brandishing their devastating mustaches as they take on the second NHL franchise to bear the name, “Jets.”

Nordy. It’s not a word. Marc Andre Fleury won’t play tonight, Tristan Jarry will. My head is full of music and actual bagels and pizza, as I play out-of-town gigs with my band in the states Garden and Empire. I’ll be home in the Burgh for Thanksgiving week, and so will the Penguins - kind of. First, though, they’ve got to get through Minnesota (tonight), Winnipeg, and Chicago, none of which sounds easy and each of which seem, after the past few weeks of miserable hockey played by the Pens, almost like a likely L for a team who simply can’t seem to find its game. We pray to the hockey gods tonight, for cohesion among a team stacked with talent, for a W, for …just about any damned thing.
