Irish Football Fix

Focus on Faith: LaPhonso Ellis

Listen Later

On the October 2nd, 2023 edition of Notre Dame Federal Credit Union's Irish Football, host Angelo Di Carlo sits down with former Notre Dame basketball great LaPhonso Ellis in a powerful conversation.

Ellis, well known as one of the nicest people you could ever meet, has an incredible faith but has been dealt an incredibility hand of adversity over the last few months. One of the nation's top college basketball analysts, Ellis was surprisingly let go by ESPN during a wide range of on-air cuts in late June. The next day he received the worst phone call of his life as he learned that his daughter Elexis, just 31, had passed away in her sleep.

For most, that 24 hour period and the sudden death of a child would crush one's faith. For LaPhonso, it does not. For him, there is peace knowing his kids are not his kids--but God's children and that this is God's plan. He is grateful for the 31 years that God gave him with his daughter.

LaPhonso shares how he's grieved and how he's stayed strong in his faith as well as an incredible story of how he first came to know God while playing in the NBA.

Ellis is a member of Notre Dame basketball's Ring of Honor, having starred for the Irish from 1988-1992. He was selected 5th overall in the NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets and played 11 seasons in the NBA.
