On the November 18th, 2024 edition of Notre Dame Federal Credit Union's Irish Football Fix, host Angelo Di Carlo chats with Army men's basketball head coach and Notre Dame alum Kevin Kuwik about his inspiring story.
Kuwik came to Notre Dame on an ROTC Scholarship. While he didn't play basketball at Notre Dame, he served as a student coach under John MacLeod and then Irish assistant Fran McCaffery.
Kuwik began his coaching career while serving his obligation to the Army. He thought his eight years was up when while an assistant coach at Ohio, he was called to serve in Iraq. Kuwik's unit actually arranged for him to get his 2-week break back stateside during the MAC Conference Tournament and Kuwik returned to surprise his head coach and team. They'd go on to win the MAC tournament and make the Big Dance with Kuwik a part of it all.
A few years later, Kuwik's girlfriend was killed in a plane crash. While working as an assistant coach under Brad Stevens at Butler and then Thad Matta at Ohio State, Kuwik would head back and forth to Washington D.C. to lobby for stricter regulations on pilot in terms of flying experience. He would get the law changed.
In 2023, he became the head coach at Army.
Kuwik shares about his journey through coaching, maximizing the opportunity that Notre Dame gave him, serving in Iraq, the honor of coaching Army, being a dad and husband and how his faith has guided him throughout it all.
